On display as you enter the Adult & Teen Services department, you will find several different art exhibits featuring the work of students from Woodridge's Jefferson Junior High. The striking and mature work from 12-, 13- and 14-year-old artists will be in place through the end of May.

Each May we hold a "Volunteer Appreciation" luncheon recognizing the dedication of our many volunteers. This year volunteer Mary Jo Campbell has reached a milestone of ten years of service to the Woodridge Library. Congratulations Mary Jo!

Starting this month, you may see  library staff members attending community events with our new "Traveling Library" service. Depending on the event, we may issue or renew library cards, check out books, demonstrate e-readers, share library information, or offer fun with trivia and games. On May 21, we'll bring our "Traveling Library" to Castaldo Park during the Salute to Summer BBQ  honoring local veterans, and on June 18 we'll be at the  Woodridge Jubilee

Summer Reading programs start registering on June 1 and a  kick-off celebration is being planned for all ages on Saturday, June 4. Don't wait until June to start reading a good book. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is open for enrollment in the Children's Library and creative book displays can be found throughout the building.

The Woodridge Public Library will host the U.S.D.A.  Summer Food Service Program on Mondays and Thursdays, from noon to 1 p.m., this summer. It is our hope that local families that can use the support of a nutritious meal for their children will enjoy visiting the library for a Summer Lunch. Kids 18 and younger will also have the opportunity to learn with a teacher volunteer or take part in reading activities in the Children's Library before and after lunch is served. Help us spread the news about this open, free program that begins June 9.
Please note that although the library will be closed on Memorial Day, outside book returns will remain open. Also, the Costumes of Downton Abbey slide lecture has been moved to Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m.

Finally, a warm welcome to our new Director, Pam Dubé, who is beginning her tenure at the library this week.

Art Gallery Showing
May's Featured Artist: Jay Moore
The Woodridge Public Library Gallery will exhibit over 30 portraits created by local artist Jay Moore beginning May 3, and running through May 29.

Each portrait has been created through an artistic process involving digital tools and embroidery techniques. Ms. Moore describes her work as "Thread Art," and has been perfecting her craft for over 26 years. From the artist's website digitalmama.net, "I digitize portraits of individuals. I then take that digitized image and using fabric as my canvas and thread as my paint create an Embroidered Portrait."

Ms. Moore was featured in the Library Gallery in February of 2010. Assembled in observance of Black History Month, the 2010 exhibit represented Ms. Moore's perspective on black history.

The upcoming May 2016 exhibit will feature pieces influenced by technological advances that have impacted the way the artist works, as well as art pieces that highlight the impact of color selection.

Members of the community are welcome to meet  Jay Moore and to discuss her unique artistic methods at a reception in the lobby of the Woodridge Library on Saturday, May 14, between 2 and 4 p.m.
