June 8 Ballkid Tryouts to be Hosted by Mayor Nutter & Billie Jean King!

The Freedoms are teaming up with the City of Philadelphia to host Philadelphia tryouts for 2011 ballkids on Wednesday, June 8 at 4 p.m. at the Parkside Evans Playground tennis courts, 5290 Parkside Ave.


Mayor Michael Nutter and tennis legend and Freedoms owner Billie Jean King invite all kids and teens, ages 10 to 16, to pre-register and to participate in a tryout. Selected ballkids will be a part of a prestigious group that will have the opportunity to participate at Freedoms home matches during this summer's World TeamTennis Pro League events at the Pavilion at Villanova University.


Registering in advance for tryouts is required. To find out more information about ballkid participation, or to register to try out, visit The first 100 kids to sign up and attend the tryouts will receive a free Philadelphia Freedoms tee shirt!


(In the event of rain, the tryout will be relocated to Gustine Recreation Center/Arthur Ashe Tennis Center, 4863 Ridge Avenue, same day and time.)

Hamlin Billie Jean King Character Award

The Philadelphia Freedoms are currently accepting applications from youth tennis players for the Billie Jean King Character Award. The Billie Jean King Character Award will distribute $10,000 in scholarships, given to ten young people, ages 10-18, who are or are seeking to become a competitive tennis player in tournaments or on their school team and have displayed outstanding character in their lives. The goal of the award is to reward and exemplify those who have displayed good character, integrity and fortitude and to prepare recipients to become mentors and character ambassadors.

The recipients of the scholarships will receive the first $500 installment of their awards at a Philadelphia Freedoms match in July 18, 2011 from WTT co-founder Billie Jean King. All recipients will be invited back to the July 19th Freedoms match to take an on-court photo with the Bryan Brothers, who exemplify character and achievement in tennis. Each recipient will also have the opportunity to participate in a 9-month CITRS virtues training and character curriculum through the PlayGr8 online locker method, and will receive the additional $500 award during this CITRS program.

2011 Freedoms Season Preview

The Freedoms' 2011 regular season schedule in the WTT Pro League presented by GEICO includes seven home matches this July at The Pavilion at Villanova University.  The Freedoms are led by head coach Pascal Collard and assistant coach Josh Cohen.  2011 team members include former world no. 1 doubles player Lisa Raymond, rising American Beatrice Capra, a WTT rookie, Brendan Evans and local resident Nathan Healey. Raymond, Capra, Evans and Healey join American teen phenom Melanie Oudin on the 2011 roster.

All Freedoms events feature world-class tennis in an innovative, fast-paced World TeamTennis coed team format.  Each evening includes exciting Block Parties featuring USTA Quick Start Tennis, live music, inflatables, mascots, kids' games, prizes, food and much more.


The Freedoms open their home season on Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m., against Venus Williams and the Washington Kastles. Tennis great Chris Evert will make a special guest appearance and play a special Celebrity Pro Set on July 12.  Legendary Hall of Famer John McEnroe, playing for the New York Sportimes, returns to Philly on July 13 in a blockbuster evening which will also include the Freedoms' top marquee draft pick and rising teenage star Melanie Oudin. The Freedoms' home match schedule will continue through July 19 with the final match-up featuring the world's top-ranked doubles team, brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, playing for the defending WTT Champion Kansas City Explorers.
