MEMORIAL TO THOSE ENSLAVED AND FREED
On April 19, students, faculty, staff, trustees, and guests attended a dedication of The Memorial to Those Enslaved and Freed. The Memorial, created by accomplished artist and retired faculty member Oletha DeVane, was erected to honor the enslaved people whose forced labor contributed to the wealth that was the basis of the School’s founding. African drumming, a wreath-laying, a libation ritual, a reading of names of the enslaved inscribed on the memorial walls, and remarks by the artist helped mark this significant moment in McDonogh’s history. During Reunion Weekend, there was a special dedication for alumni and guests of the artist. After the ceremony, attendees filled the Klein Lyceum for the premiere of a documentary on the creation of the Memorial produced by Emmy Award-winning journalist, filmmaker, and writer Robin Hamilton 91. Watch the documentary.
ALUMNI ESTABLISH NEW TEACHING CHAIR, NEW FUND
On March 3, Head of School Dave Farace 87 announced the creation of a new faculty chair and a new endowed fund. The Gordon B. Shelton 64 Science Fund was created in honor of A. Ogden “Bugs” Ramsay, a member of McDonogh’s science faculty for 44 years. Ramsay nurtured the interest of countless boys and sparked the successful science careers of many, like Shelton, who studied under him. The Gordon B. Shelton 64 Science Fund will be used to teach students to become self-reliant, critical thinkers who can form, test, and revise their ideas, just as Bugs instructed.
Neal Moszkowski 84 established The Paul E. Smith Teaching Chair to honor Smith, a physical education teacher and coach from 1974 to 1990 and the first Black member of the School's faculty. Smith had a gift for relating to students on a personal level, building camaraderie among peers, and inspiring athletes of all abilities to do their best. He stressed the essential skills of effort, integrity, resilience, and honor, and Moszkowski believes these characteristics contributed to his own success. Middle School art teacher Denise Wolf is the first recipient of the Paul E. Smith Teaching Chair.
COMMUNITY CELEBRATES SCHOLARSHIP
On April 10, more than 250 students, mentors, donors, Living Legacy Society members, trustees, faculty, staff, and special guests gathered to recognize one of McDonogh’s most important and enduring traditions. Head of School Dave Farace ’87, a former scholarship student himself, spoke about the significance of McDonogh’s Scholarship Program and featured speakers Tom Dance ’66 and Niles Riding ’22 reflected on their experiences and the impact of a McDonogh education. A RECAP OF REUNION WEEKEND
After one canceled Reunion Weekend and one virtual Reunion Weekend, alumni were back on campus April 29-May 1 to enjoy three days of fun. The festivities included a mix of traditional activities like campus tours, a cocktail party, the Crab Feast and Family Picnic, and class parties as well as unique events like the McDonogh Voices dance performance, the alumni dedication of The Memorial to Those Enslaved and Freed, and the premiere of a film documenting the creation of the memorial. See the photos and learn more

Friday evening also included a joint Young Alumni Award and Distinguished Service Award (DSA) ceremony honoring young alumni Kai Cunningham ’12, Brielle Smoot Ferguson ’07, and Lisa Tostanoski ’08 and DSA recipients Erika Seth Davies ’94, Noreen Lidston, and Butch Maisel III ’72. MCDONOGH VOICES FINISHES FIRST YEAR
The inaugural year of this stimulating discussion series designed to give stories about the School’s past a greater voice in McDonogh’s present and future focused on our understanding of history. After three community conversations and an art exhibit in Tuttle Art Gallery, the series concluded on April 29 with an inspiring dance performance. Nile Russell ’00, Naana Badu ’00, Jenn Ford ’00, and current students performed a piece that highlighted the dichotomy and complexity of McDonogh (the person and the School), the importance of creating greatness in difficult times, and a forward vision of the McDonogh community’s future.
