Open House Being Held To Honor John Kirchgassner In His Retirement.
Since the 1972-73 school year, McNicholas High School has been blessed to serve as the home of John Kirchgassner, best known to our community as Kirch. Thousands of students have been influenced and mesmerized by his stories over the decades. We hope that you will be able to join Kirch to celebrate his retirement at an open house on Sunday, April 24.  The event will be from 1-3 p.m., and light refreshments will be provided. If the weather is nice, we will be in the school courtyard; if the weather is not cooperative,  we will move to the

Connecting the Dots
with Shawn Young

Back Row: Anita Scales Threet '89, Joe Santorelli '90, Shawn Young '82, Jim Serger '89, Bob Scott '90
Front Row Bob Cappel '67, Kevin Cappel '89, Leah Cappel Mattingly '87.
One of the great things about being the alumni manager at McNicholas High School is all of the Rockets that are out there and willing to share their stories with me.  I love hearing a good story. The other day I received an email from Jim Serger '89.  He informed me that he has a great story to tell. Jim is publishing his third book which is about his interactions with another Rocket, Bob Cappel '68.  Bob was the owner of Summit Meats back when Jim was growing up, and Bob taught Jim many great life lessons.  Jim wanted to get this into a book, which he did called, Next in Line Please. But that was not the end of the story.  The forward to the book was written by Kevin Cappel '89, who is now married to Anita Scales Threet '89.  Plus the book has a nice write up by Joe Santorelli '90, owner of Arthur's.  In talking with Jim, we decided it would be great story if we could get all of these Rockets together and talk about the book and about McNick. We were joined by Bob's wife Penny, and his children Leah '87, Kevin ' 89 and Bob '90. I thought it was going to be a quick little meeting, but it lasted for hours.  It turns out they were kind enough to invite me to Bob's birthday dinner! The family stories made me feel like I was having dinner back at my childhood home.  Thank you to Jim for putting this night together and to Bob for sharing his story and his birthday with me.

" Anderson Twp. is a great community, I lived there for over 30 years. Today I live in Carmel, Indiana. Operations manager at the Indianapolis Airport. My youth was molded by men and women from Anderson Twp. and  Summit Estates; from IHM and of course by teachers at McNick. But, my first job, at the age of 16 at the little strip-mall, is what guided me to working hard in life. I thank Bob Cappel for allowing me to write this book about him, his accomplishments, his trials, his persona and his leadership abilities. A butcher; small, yet we can learn so much from his ways. " Jim Serger

Jim and Bob were also interviewed on WVXU, if you would like to listen to that interview you can click here.

If you or your group has a great McNicholas story that you would like to share, I would love to meet up with you as well.

Haymarket Riot Rocks the Dance
The McNicholas Military Memorial Committee held its annual fundraising dance on Saturday, February 27 in the McNicholas gym.  A crowd of about 220 people, including numerous alumni, filled the gym and rocked to the sounds of Haymarket Riot, which features 2 Rockets John Parker '68, and Steve Helwig '69. Committee members and other volunteers raffled off gift baskets and split-the-pot chances. Proceeds from the dance will be used to award scholarships to eighth grade students who will attend McNicholas the following school year.  Since beginning these fundraising dances five years ago, the Military Memorial Committee has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships.  The next round of scholarships, which will be awarded in December for the 2017 school year, will push that total over the $45,000 mark.

On behalf of the entire committee, Jim Hay, committee chairman, would like to thank everyone who attended the dance to show support for the Military Memorial Committee and the scholarship funding, especially those alumni, faculty members, administrators and friends who have supported the dances year after year.
