Register now for the Summer Reading Program and win prizes for reading

Mead Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has begun, with cardholders from newborns on up eligible to participate.

Kids can earn free books, coupons and other rewards for reading or being read to. Meanwhile, participants of all ages will be entered into prize drawings for reading. 

Prizes include a Blue Harbor gift card, new bicycle, Xbox One, Kindle Fire, LEGOs and more. 

The program also includes family events throughout the summer.

Mead launches Civic Lab series 
Mead Public Library will launch its new Civic Lab series in June featuring programs, materials and activities focused on a variety of complex political, cultural and social issues.

The series will kick off with a book discussion and panel talk that will dig into the phenomenon of “fake news,” with a look at media, journalism and how information is shared.

The book discussion begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, at Paradigm Coffee & Music in Sheboygan, and will feature “The Influencing Machine: Brooke Gladstone on the Media.” Copies are available for checkout in the library at the second-floor Help Desk.

A panel discussion, titled “Truth, Lies and Clickbait: Media Literacy for a New Era,” will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 15, in the Rocca Meeting Room at the library. 

Panelists include Nhia Yang, David Gallianetti and Kevin Anderson. 

The public can also visit the second floor to checkout related materials, leave anonymous notes expressing views on the topic or engage in Fireside
Conversations near the library’s fireplace. 

Zoozort coming June 14

Kids can visit with live animals from around the world and learn about habitat, nutrition and conservation during a visit from Zoozort.

Shows start at 10 a.m. & 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, in the Rocca Meeting Room.

Seating is limited. Tickets will be given out one hour before each session on a first-come, first-served basis.

After hours program for adults 21+, where attendees can explore different maker
activities, ranging from arts and crafts to tech, while enjoying music, popcorn and a cash bar from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, July 28, at the library. In collaboration with Bookworm
Gardens, MAKER Break, the Etude Group and Red Raider Robotics.

Dennis McNett Workshop, noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 21, Imaginarium. Join John Michael Kohler Arts Center Connecting Communities artist Dennis McNett in completing works supporting his story of the Serpent of Sheboygan. In what will be his final visit to Sheboygan, workshop participants will create flags and banners for the Wolfbat tribes appearance at the concluding celebration on June 22, at the opening night of the Levitt Amp Sheboygan Music Series.  Drop-in session. Open to all ages.

Library Night in the ARTery: Literary Creature Kites, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 22, at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Join us for a fun-filled family evening as we make and fly kites during the Levitt Amp Summer Concert Series.

KIDS

Zoozort, 10 a.m. & 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, Rocca Meeting Room. Kids can visit with live animals from around the world and learn about habitat, nutrition and

Wii Gaming, drop-in gaming for grades 2-6 will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Story Garden on the following Thursdays: June 15, 22 & 29; July 6, 13, 20 & 27; Aug. 3 & 10.

LEGO Club, drop in and build using the library’s LEGO supply anytime from 10 a.m. to noon in the Children’s Activity Room on the following Mondays: June 19, July 17 & Aug. 7. For kids in grades K-6.

Summer Storytime, 9:30 & 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays (except July 4) from June 20 to Aug. 1, in the Story Garden. Kids of all ages are welcome. Featuring stories, music, rhymes and activities.

Kids Craft Corner, featuring a monthly make-and-take craft project on a drop-in basis from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Children’s Activity Room on the following Wednesdays: June 21, July 5 & Aug. 2. While supplies last.

Bubbleology, 10 a.m. & 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, Rocca Meeting Room. Kids can explore the science of bubbles with Dr. Angelika Henke of Elementastic Science. Seating is limited. Tickets will be given out one hour before each session on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tom Pease, the popular children’s singer/entertainer, will perform at 9:30 & 11:30 a.m. and at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, in the Rocca Meeting Room. Seating is limited. Tickets will be given out at 9 a.m. for the first show and one hour before the subsequent shows on a first-come, first-served basis.

Block Partykids up to sixth grade and their families can have constructive fun with blocks, LEGOs, boxes and other building materials set up at stations throughout the Children’s Library anytime between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Coloring Stations will be set up in the Children’s Library throughout August, and kids can participate in a coloring contest.

ADULTS/TEENS

Featuring... Kim Geiser, Hello Happiness Coloring Party for Adults, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, Imaginarium. Local artist, Hello Happiness shop owner and coloring book author/illustrator Kim Geiser will lead adults in a discussion of her work as a maker as they color and paint her designs. Adults only. Movie Night, watch the film “Hidden Figures” at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 17, in the Rocca Meeting Room.

Featuring... Suw Charman-Anderson: Amigurumi Women in STEM, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, Imaginarium. Pay homage to some of the most prominent women in the history of science, technology, engineering and math using tamigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting dolls.
