Win prizes for reading this summer

Mead Public Library’s 2018 Summer Reading Program has begun, with cardholders from newborns on up eligible to participate.

The program features prizes, rewards and events all summer long that promote literacy and provide opportunities to explore, create and connect at Mead.

Kids can earn free books, coupons, a yard sign and other rewards for reading or being read to. Meanwhile, participants of all ages will be entered into prize drawings for reading.

Prizes, which vary by age, include a new bicycle, Xbox One, Kindle Fire, HDTV, music instruments, a record player, Amazon Echo and more.

The program is free thanks to support from our community partners.

Mead hosting Family Night series

at the new City Green

Join Mead Public Library, Sheboygan Visual Artists and Maker Break at the new City Green in downtown Sheboygan from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesdays, June 26 - July 31, for music, movement, games, stories and crafts during the Mead Family Night Series.

Special Events for Adults

Late @ the Library: Ultimate Maker Party

Adults can visit the library after hours and explore arts, crafts, robots, gaming, tech and other maker activities with the Étude Group, Maker Break, c.Cal Studio and Storm Bunny Studios. With food available from Luz de Luna.

Held 6:30-9 p.m., Friday, June 29.

From Word to Mouth

We're launching a new series this summer, called "From Word to Mouth," where you can explore the local restaurant scene with fellow food enthusiasts.

Registration is now open for our first stop, "A Taste of Spain" at Luz de Luna on June 6.

LEGO Night

There’s no outgrowing LEGOs.

Adults and teens are invited to drop in and build with our LEGO Architecture kits, from 5-7 p.m., Thursdays, June 28, July 26 & Aug. 23, in the

Imaginarium.

Live music with

Tom Pease

Entertainer Tom Pease will perform at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., and at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, June 27, in the Rocca Room. Limited seating.

Tickets will be given out at 9 a.m. for first show and one hour before each subsequent show on a first-come, first-served basis.

Zoozort returns to the library

Kids can visit with live animals from around the world at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, June 13, in the Rocca Room. Limited seating.

Tickets available in Children’s Library one hour before each

session on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Dewey Disco Kids Dance Party

Get your wiggles out and dance the morning away during our Kids Dance Party. Recommended for ages 3-6.

Glow bracelets while supplies last, from 10-11 a.m., Thursday, June 14, in the Rocca Room.

Harmonica From Scratch with Lil’ Rev, get started on the harmonica in our beginner-level class taught by Lil’ Rev. From 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Tuesdays: June 5, 12, 19 & 26; in The Loft. For ages 12 and up. Registration required.

Tinker Time, featuring self-guided open studio time in the Imaginarium. Explore Adobe Creative Suite 6, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, LilyPad, Makey Makey, littleBits, LEGO Mindstorms, 3D printing, jewelry making, collage, yarn crafts, precision cutting, sewing, button making, t-shirt pressing and more.

Every Wednesday, Memorial Day-Labor Day, 1-4 p.m.
Thursdays: June 14 & 21; July 12 & 19; Aug. 9 & 16; 5-7 p.m.

Maker Break Monday, featuring different drop-in projects each week with Maker Break, from 1-3 p.m., Mondays, June 25-July 30, in the Imaginarium. Open to all ages but children under 14 must be with an adult.

KIDS

Kids Coding Petting Zoo, kids in grades 2-6 can try out littleBits, Ozobots, Makey Makey and more, from 3:30-5 p.m., on Wednesday, May 30, in the Children’s Activity Room.

Kindermusik, sign up for this world-renowned music and movement program offering kids and caregivers the chance to connect through music, learning and play, 9:30-10:15 a.m. in the Story Garden on the following dates (registration required):

Rise & Shine, ages 0-1, June 7
Family & Friends, ages 1-4, June 21
Time for Lunch, ages 1-4, two options: Aug. 9 or 23

Baby & Me Storytime, babies ages 6-23 months can enjoy simple books, lap bounces, songs, rhymes and fingerplays. Socialization and free play to follow, 9:30 a.m., Mondays, June 25-July 30, in the Story Garden.

Family Storytime, kids of all ages and their families can enjoy books, music, rhymes and other activities, Tuesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., from June 26-July 31, in the Story Garden.

Books on Bikes, librarians from the Sheboygan Area School District and Mead will ride to various stops throughout the city and distribute books and freeze pops. View schedule at: www.booksonbikessheboygan.org.

Kazoo Parade & Craft, kids can make headbands and then march with kazoos to the new City Green, 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 11. Meet in the Children’s Activity Room.

Kids Craft Corner, featuring make-and-take craft projects on a drop-in basis from 1-2 p.m. in the Children’s Activity Room, on the following Wednesdays:

Back-to-School Bingo, kids in grades K-5 can play bingo for prizes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in the Children’s Activity Room.

From Word to Mouth, explore the local restaurant scene with fellow food enthusiasts. Learn about the featured cuisine beforehand with recommended reading and then meet up to sample and discuss. Registration required. Attendees must cover dining costs. Held 6-7:30 p.m.

Sheboygan County Writers Club Monthly Meeting, offering a place to meet other writers, share your writing and discuss the joys and trials of the writing life. All genres and experience levels welcome, 1-3 p.m.; second Mondays: June 11 & July 9; Rocca Room.

Tech Talks, featuring lessons on a variety of tech topics, 6-7 p.m., third Tuesdays.

Sewing Made Simple: Dyed & Sewn Decorative Pillow Case, this two-part workshop will explore textile dying techniques and basic machine sewing to complete a decorative throw pillow case. Registration required. For ages 12 and up. Beginners welcome. Bring your own sewing machine, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 19 & 26, Imaginarium.

Poetry Reading: John Sierpinski, poet and Pushcart Prize nominee John Sierpinski will read from his new full-length poetry collection, “Sucker Hole.” Books will also be available for purchase and signing, 4-5 p.m., Thursday, June 21, Rocca Room.

Summer Reading Program Kick-off Carnival, join us at ACUITY headquarters from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13. Bring your library card and sign up for the 2018 Acuity Cool Picks Summer Reading Program, play giant versions of some of your favorite games or try the Wii on the big screen. We’ll also be making t-shirts and buttons. Enjoy free soda, walking tacos and ice cream. Participate in activities to earn chances to win gift cards to Marcus Cinema.
