Medicare and Social Security Scam Calls in Our Area

Under this scam, a con artist calls you posing as Medicare, Social Security, or an insurance company representative. The caller generally claims that new Medicare, Social Security, or supplemental insurance benefits cards are being issued or that your file must be updated. The scam artist will then ask you to provide or verify your personal or financial information.

Never provide this sort of private information to an unknown person over the phone, as disclosure of this information can lead to identity theft and unauthorized withdrawals from your financial accounts. Additional information on scams is available here

Remember, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Social Security Administration will not call you to update your information or give you a new card.

If someone who calls you asks for your personal information, do not provide it.

Do You Need the IRS Tax Form?
Click here for the 2016 tax forms. Click here to file for free

Taxpayers who have moved should tell the US Postal Service, their employers and the IRS. To notify the IRS, mail IRS Form 8822 , Change of Address, to the address listed on the form’s instructions. For taxpayers who purchase health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace , they should also notify the Marketplace when they move out of the area covered by their current Marketplace plan.

For name changes due to marriage or divorce, notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) so the new name will match IRS and SSA records. Also notify the SSA if a dependent’s name changed.  A mismatch between the name shown on your tax return and the SSA records can cause problems in the processing of your return and may even delay your refund.
