Celebrating the Life of Dr. Min-Hua Chen

On January 15, colleagues of Dr. Min-Hua Chen gathered at Lesley University to celebrate her life. Dr. Chen came to BCNC 20 years ago and developed an evidence-based dual-language education philosophy and methodology. The program structure is now recognized by World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) and other organizations as a model approach. Generations of children in BCNC's child care program have benefited from her work, and our Child Care Center has been the recipient of many donated books for its library. We appreciate Dr. Chen's positive impact on so many lives at BCNC!

Youth Attend Art-Making Workshop

Our Boston Youth Leadership Program attended the "Why Comix? Drawing the World You Want To See Youth Art-Making Workshop" at Northeastern University. The workshop was facilitated by Barrington Edwards, a visual arts faculty member at Boston Arts Academy. As part of the Comcast Digital Connectors program, youth participated in a specialized art tutorial to explore questions of identity, imagery, and imagination through comic book artwork. The workshop exposed youth to different forms of media as tools for self-expression and will support their creative expression as they create personalized digital stories.

Parents Learn Effective Test Preparation for Children

In collaboration with Josiah Quincy Elementary School (JQES), 15 parents and 17 children attended the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) workshop on Friday, January 29. JQES teacher, Ms. Sheung, shared examples of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade PARCC test, and parents had the opportunity to take the test themselves. Topics of academic preparedness and social-emotional readiness in regards to test-taking were also addressed. The workshop was part of BCNC's larger effort to promote parent engagement in their child's school experience.

Giles Li Quoted in Quincy Newspaper

Executive Director, Giles Li, discusses the increasing needs of Asian residents in Quincy, resulting in higher demand of BCNC services in Quincy. Li states the importance of increasing community involvement of Asian Quincy residents.  "It's the responsibility for the service providers like us to let people know (that coming to America) is not just about getting a good education and getting a good job. It's also about you getting involved in your community. That means voting, knowing what the issues are, knowing what your government tax dollars are going to. New arrivals have to hold up their end of the bargain." Click here to read the full article in The Patriot Ledger.
