State Farm Agent Dave Frederickson is one of the top 5% of State Farm agents in the United States. But he didn’t start out that way. He’s worked hard and has grown his business in Edgewater since first opening his office on Clark Street in 1996.
Dave graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1984. That summer he worked three job selling shoes, records, and painting houses. While at the shoe store, he met a woman who saw his potential and recommended he work for her husband at State Farm.
Dave started working in the State Farm claims department in 1984. He worked there for 13 years before becoming an agent. He loved the company but wanted to align his work more with his skills and interests. So, when he had the opportunity to train as an agent, he jumped at the chance. Moving into an agent position allowed him to serve customers by helping them prepare for and recover from life’s unexpected events.
Before opening an office, he interviewed the executive directors of what was then DevCorp North in Rogers Park and the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce to get a feel for the neighborhoods and to help him decide where to locate his new office. He settled on North Clark Street south of Devon in Edgewater. He started out with two employees and has since grown his office to seven employees. He attributes his success to his approach of being fair to his customers and always doing what’s in their best interest.
Twenty-two years later he still loves his work. He gets the opportunity to help people in their time of crisis and provide them with the services they need. Whether its helping a family who just had a fire in their home, or a family after loosing a loved one, it’s rewarding to be able to support people when they need it most.
Since he opened his agency, Dave has become ingrained in the Edgewater community. He has served on the board of the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce since 1997 and sponsors non-profit organizations, little league teams and plenty of other causes.
Dave deepened his investment in the neighborhood in October 2016 by purchasing a building at 6255 N Clark Street. He renovated the building and moved his office to its new permanent home in November 2017.
When asked what advice he would give to young people starting off in the service or sales industry, he recommends paying attention to your clients and finding out what’s important to them. Based on what you learn, you can make recommendations and allow them to make the decision that’s right for them.
Lest you assume its all work and no play for Dave, he finds time to cheer on his teams -- the White Sox and Blackhawks -- as well as see live music all over town.
