A shining example of Institute research in the area of noise mitigation is the work of Don Hunsaker II, PhD.

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo).
Dr. Hunsaker first arrived to San Diego in 1960 after obtaining a PhD in Zoology from the University of Texas where he had initially developed his interests and research in animal communication. Dr. Hunsaker collaborated at San Diego State University with long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Frank Awbrey, who specialized in amphibian vocalization. Over the years, Dr. Hunsaker's research and study evolved into a focus on rare and endangered species in southern California, in particular, the effects of human development impacts on these populations.
Drs. Awbrey and Hunsaker both maintained research contracts with SDSU and Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in bioacoustics and related ecological studies. HSWRI had a sophisticated Bioacoustics Laboratory that enabled the scientists to analyze sounds with increased accuracy and efficiency, so research was maintained at both institutions.
