Candidate for President-Elect

Andrea K. Owens, MSNEd, RN, CRNI, VA-BC

My professional career has spanned 38 years in Adult Critical Care, Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy, clinical management, clinical education, and higher education. I am currently an Assistant Professor at Marian University, Leighton School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, IN.  In addition to my Course Lead and clinical duties, I am a passionate advocate for interprofessional education to enhance future patient outcomes through collaborative practice.  I continue to encourage curriculum development related to skills acquisition and critical knowledge for nursing students and medical students learning vascular access assessment, placement, and care and maintenance.

My tenure with AVA for the last several years has allowed me to experience the different levels of commitment that fully support a member-based national organization. I have also come to deeply appreciate the rich heritage of this association. As a current Director-at-Large on the Board of Directors, I have passionately embraced the vision and mission of AVA, devoted my energies to its growth, and supported the many important initiatives outlined in the current strategic plan. My unique qualities and experiences have allowed me to understand the needs of a diverse membership, work effectively to advance our specialty, and lead AVA with a leadership emphasis on collaborative consensus. I still firmly believe that ‘everything we do matters’ and I will support those initiatives that advance best practice and lead to improved patient outcomes.
