Q: What's your favorite thing about volunteering at the bookstore?
I really enjoy working with the volunteers at the Bookstore. There are so many different people, with varying backgrounds, and they really make this a happy place to volunteer. I enjoy seeing the regular customers, and helping them find what they are seeking. In particular, I like seeing the children, and how they love looking through the books and finding a treasure to buy. Children’s books are such good value at the Bookstore, and it is satisfying to know that we are making so many books available at low cost to families and schools in Boca. It is also such a pleasure to be working with the talented and experienced online sales team, and chatting about some of the unusual books that come our way. We share the excitement of finding treasures, making online sales, and knowing that this money is helping fund so many special activities at the library.
Q: What are your favorite books that the bookstore sells and why?
The Bookstore has an extensive fiction section where I like to browse for mysteries, and, of course, the cookbook section is a must visit every time I am in the Bookstore. However, my favorite section is the children’s section, where I have bought dozens of fabulous books for my grandchildren.
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
I am originally from England, but have lived in America for over 30 years, becoming a US citizen 15 years ago. I spent 15 years as a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then took on the role of Administrative Director for the National Energy Policy Institute at the University of Tulsa, where I had the privilege of working with many distinguished and knowledgeable energy professionals from all over the world to develop an energy policy for the US.
Q: What do you think is an underused feature of the library?
The program at the library where children can practice their reading skills by reading to a therapy dog is such a brilliant idea. What better way to practice reading can there be but to curl up with a good book and a dog? I also think the Friends Bookstore must be Boca’s hidden gem. With an ever-changing selection of thousands of used books at incredibly low prices, it is always an inviting place to browse for a good book to take home.
