This Shabbat we will be hosting Kids of Courage, a volunteer based non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults with serious medical diagnoses. Tonight at Friday Night Live at 6:00pm, we will meet the children and the program directors and hear how these heroic children battle for their lives, sometimes for every breath. They inspire others with their strength, tenacity and dazzling will to live. Kids of Courage is giving them the opportunity to live like other children and experience life in the best way imaginable. They help them forget the tubes and pumps and needles and the daily challenges and experience the thrills of carefree childhood happiness. Please click on the image bellow to see the video "About Kids of Courage" - just make sure to have some tissues near by.
Kids of Courage provides necessary respite to the remarkable families who care for their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters every day without rest. By allowing these courageous children to go on medically supervised dream trips, they also give their families a few days off to relax and recuperate from the physically and emotionally exhausting lifestyles they lead.
Kids of Courage services over 300 families with seriously sick children and young adults. The programming goes on all year round complete with trips, weekends and fun events. All services provide by our organization is free to the families they service. They firmly believe that the families they serve have enough burdens in their lives without worrying about the finances needed to provide fun and respite. Their staff are all volunteers. There are no salaries or financial compensation to any members of the team.
Seeing the work of this incredible organization is incredibly inspiring and really makes you appreciate the things in life that we take for granted. As I mentioned in the previous email, Simone and I were blessed with the birth of a daughter this past week and thank God both of them are doing well. We both want to thank everyone for their nice messages and well wishes over the past few days. This Shabbat Simone and I will be naming our daughter at approximately 10:00 am at the main service at Boca Raton Synagogue. If you decide to attend, following the baby naming, the Explanatory Experience will take place in the Library on the 2nd Floor. Following the service there will be a Kiddush in the Social Hall for everyone to enjoy.
This Sunday the Boca Raton Synagogue will be hosting their annual Purim Carnival. It's a great event for children and if you would like to attend I will be happy to get you complementary tickets for all of the rides. Also the final "Crash Courses" that were cancelled last week will take place this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Finally I want to thank everyone that participated in Shabbat Across America last Friday night. It was a fantastic event and I hope that you will be able to join my family next week at the annual Purim Seudah (meal to commemorate the miracle of Purim), details to follow...

DAILY LIFT
Your identity creates you. And you choose your identity. Yes, your childhood, your parent's view of you, the way others have treated you, who you compare yourself with, all have had a part in creating your identity. But it's only because now in the present you have decided to keep the identity you have been influenced to have. And if you haven't made a conscious decision how to view your identity, you are still making a decision, albeit a passive one. You might already view yourself as a happy, joyous person. If so, great. If that's not yet your picture of yourself, it makes sense to start viewing yourself this way now. All you need is one moment of happiness or joy to consider yourself as one. |
Today in Jewish History
In 1957, Israeli troops withdrew from the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula. This followed the Suez War of 1956, in which France, Britain and Israel teamed up to stop Egyptian interference with shipping through the Suez Canal. (The canal was a crucial trade link between Europe and the regions of India, North Africa and the Middle East; two-thirds of Europe's oil passed through the Suez Canal.) In the war, Israel was able to secure Gaza and the Sinai, but fearing a larger conflict with the Soviet Union, U.S. President Eisenhower forced a cease-fire and persuaded Israel to withdraw. In response to the Suez War, the Egyptian government expelled 25,000 Egyptian Jews and confiscated their property, and sent 1,000 more Jews to prisons and detention camps. |
