Scripture of the Day
And the spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. ( Mark 1:12)

In Matthew and Luke, the text says Jesus was “led” out. Mark, unbound by any need to coddle my nerves, is more honest about it. Who willingly walks out into the desert? Certainly not I! Maybe it is just the crash of emotion after something really good happens, but I have come to anticipate a period of lean after any period of prolonged bounty. The Spirit is not wont to let me rest on my laurels, but drives me ever to the next test and the next lesson. For, though it annoys like no other, desert times are of value and can be opportunities of growth.

Holy Spirit, I am fine where I am. But if I must be driven out into the desert, then come with me. Do not abandon me to torment and temptation. Be my guide through the famine until again I can feast with Christ at his table. Amen.
