Superyacht owners and the industry often suffer from a black eye. All too often, the image portrayed is of a self-centered, selfish, or evil person (Hollywood movies, anyone?). So we're all too happy to prove them wrong, especially when owners, crew, and charter guests are giving a black eye to a devastating disease.
Pictured is actor Sylvester Stallone with Capt. Simon MacKay of Enchantress, each wearing wristbands supporting Cogs4Cancer. Formed four years ago by amateur cyclists in yachting, Cogs4Cancer is a charity hosting annual rides to raise funds for cancer-fighting organizations. Stallone and MacKay signed up last September as supporters for this year's ride, in October.
Yes, you read that right: They pledged support 12+ months in advance.
What's more, they became the first donors for an effort focused on hitting the €1-million mark. Considering Cogs4Cancer has raised more than €700,000 over the previous three years, chances are good they'll score a knockout.
To be clear, the ride will be grueling: 1,400 kilometers (about 870 miles), from London to Antibes, in 10 days. Then again, cancer is far more grueling.
If you'd like to lend your support, donate online, or sponsor a rider or a stage via the Cogs4Cancer website. If you're riding, email me, and we'll give you a shout-out on social media, to help raise more money.
