Sustainable Disaster Relief Housing Conference brings In-the-Trenches Experts with Real-World Solutions

The International Conference on Sustainable Disaster Relief Housing to be held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on October 27 and 28, will examine housing crises left in the wake of natural disasters. Earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, drought, flooding, forest fires, and hurricanes all require a rapid response for housing solutions, but these solutions can be complicated by the severity of the occurrence and its location, climatic conditions, and other factors. Learn from aid agencies and suppliers of solutions who were involved in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina (2005), the Indonesian tsunami (2006), earthquakes in Haiti (2010) and Chile (2011), and Japan's recent catastrophic events following this year's earthquake. Explore topics concerning the building systems available; shipping, delivery, and erection considerations; and the financing and coordination of relief efforts to arrive at timely and affordable sustainable solutions, This conference is being organized by the Forest Products Society Eastern Canadian Section and the International Office. Forest Products Society Supports APT Book Drive

In a cross-membership collaboration, FPS is reaching out to support a book drive sponsored by the Association for Preservation Technology International.

In February 2011, the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) organized a research trip to Cuba for historic-preservation architects, planners, conservators, and engineers that included tours of wood conservation projects in Havana and other cities. Due to an expressed desire for access to more professional literature in the preservation and conservation world outside Cuba, APT will collect books, periodicals, and other literature to donate to Cuban preservationists during the upcoming annual conference held this year in Victoria, Canada October 11–16, 2011. FPS is donating several copies of the Wood Handbook to this important cause. Since 1935, the Wood Handbook has been a trusted source for building professionals looking to obtain information on the latest in wood research and design knowledge.

Have you ordered your new edition of the Wood Handbook? Would you like to make a difference to help increase the quality of preservation-technology work with wood? Consider donating your older edition of the Wood Handbook (or other FPS-published material) to the upcoming APT book drive! For more information, please contact Janelle Leafblad (a FPS and APT member) if you are planning to attend the conference or if you would like to send materials with an attendee.
