Hike NS Enews: July 2018
Learn about Hike NS's member fee increase along with some featured upcoming events, government consultation on coastal protection and an award presented to Norris Whiston.
Member Fees to Increase

On June 23 at the Hike NS Annual General Meeting in Truro, a membership fee increase was approved as follows: Individual membership will go from $10 to $20; Lifetime membership will go from $100 to $200; Family membership will go from $18 to $35; and Group membership will go from $25 to $50. It is effective starting August 1 for new members or membership renewals. We continue to offer free associate membership, but it includes only the monthly enews and does not include other paid member benefits.
Call for Fall 2018 Guided Hikes
Deadline: August 15, 2018

Hike NS invites groups across NS to partner with it on delivering fall guided hikes from September to November 2018. If your municipality, First Nation or organization can organize a hike (or already plan to host a hike), please register your event here by August 15, 2018 for events between September 14 and November 12. Note that one organization may register only up to five hikes (register only one event per form).

Waterfalls Book Presentation July 9, Halifax
Goose Lane Editions will host a presentation based on the new book Waterfalls of Nova Scotia, by Benoit Lalonde, on July 9 in Halifax at 6:30 pm at the Halifax Central Library. Hike NS will be on hand with a display. Learn more here.

Liscombe Hiking Adventure Sept. 8
Join Liscombe Lodge and Hike Nova Scotia on the Liscombe Hike Adventure on September 8 in support of Hike NS. 
Explore the Liscombe River Trail with guide Lori Taylor followed by a BBQ, evening hike and resting by the bonfire. 

Digby Hiking Adventure Sept. 29
Join the Digby Pines and Hike Nova Scotia on the Digby Hike Adventure on September 29 in support of Hike NS. Hike at Van Tassel Lake with two experience guides followed by a lovely meal and sleep back at the Pines. Learn more and register here.

New Government Plan

Coastal Protection Provincial Consultation
The government has committed to creating legislation to provide legal protection for our coasts. It's asking the public to provide input on designing this new legislation. Take the survey and read the consultation document here. The Ecology Action Centre has good information online about coastal protection and things the legislation should include. Learn more here.  The deadline for feedback is August 17 .

New HRM Green Network Plan
HRM's New Green Network Plan is a plan for creating a greenbelt for Halifax and it was released on June 21. View the document here. The Our HRM Alliance has been pushing for the plan for quite some time and has provided an analysis of it here.

Feature: Whiston Receives Award

Norris Whiston was presented with a Summit Award at the Hike NS AGM in Truro on June 23. The Summit Award recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to the growth and development of hiking in Nova Scotia.  Norris is a long-time board member of Hike NS and has been involved with the Cobequid Eco-Trails Society. His passion for hiking, nature and history has contributed greatly to the development of trails in Colchester County. Read the full post here .
