In our Old Testament reading, the Lord calls upon us to abandon our thoughts and our ways, which are earthly, because the Lord's way of doing things is heavenly. The Lord acts in a totally divine manner, but I repeat myself. To say that God acts like God, and that we act like men, is not saying much, but to say exactly how God acts is more instructive.
To say that the Lord's ways are higher than ours is not merely to say that his ways are incomprehensible or far beyond the grasp of our meager human minds. To discuss the Lord's majesty, his "bigness", belongs to the realm of contemporary worship songs and speculative treatises from the pen of John Piper. To say that the Lord is "bigger than us" is just a mere formality.
Our Lord Jesus teaches us that this "highness" of God's thinking and acting is not demonstrated in his power, but in his generosity, in his inexplicable love for sinful man. Paul Gerhardt praises this "way of the Lord" thus, "O love, beyond all telling, that led you to embrace, in love all love excelling, our lost and fallen race" (LSB 334). Or, as put in another of his hymns, "O wondrous Love, what have you done! The Father offers up His Son, desiring our salvation. O Love, how strong You are to save! You lay the one into the grave who built the earth's foundation" (LSB 438).
Unlike us, our Lord is gracious and compassionate; our Lord forgives even before he is asked. His "highness" is his very exultation upon the wood of the cross in unimaginable generosity. This is our Lord's "foolishness," his "incomprehensible" way, that he relentlessly pursues us with open arms, spread out in cruciform blessing for all the world to receive.
