At Peace With God
In this Sunday's Old Testament reading, we have the recording of a covenant between God and his people. When it comes covenants, we always observe two things. First, that there are rules. Do something and receive a benefit. Do it not and receive the penalty. Second, that we fail to keep the covenant every time.
Jesus Christ was sent to this world to take up the requirements of the covenant of the Law on our behalf. Because Jesus is both God and man (without sin), he is able to keep the demands of the Law perfectly, which is the divine requirement. Because Jesus is both God and man (without sin), he is able to receive the penalty due to sin and pay it in full. Because of Jesus' love for us, he has sacrificed himself for us thus fulfilling the Law. Because of this sacrifice, we are now at peace with God.
