Dead in Sin
In this Sunday's epistle reading, St. Paul tells us that as the children of Adam and Eve, we are all dead in our sin. Typically, when we hear the word dead, we think this means inactive like a dead battery. Tragically, dead in sin means active in sinning. In this state, we really have no reason to expect any good to come from it. We are in God's hands. We are under his judgment. Yet, it is here in his hands and under his judgement that God does the unthinkable. Rather than justly punishing those who have broken and continue to break the law, God takes the penalty due to sinners and he lays it on the back of another, the one who has no sin, Jesus Christ. In our Lord's perfect life, innocent death, and glorious resurrection, the wages of sin have been paid for us and new life with God is now ours.
