It's a Big Day
Five hundred years ago, Dr. Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the Castle church door in Wittenberg. He thought he was advertising for an academic debate about the value of indulgences. How wrong he was! He touched off a debate that eventually touched on the very center of the Christian religion: how are we saved; by faith or by works? Luther's answer was, like St. Paul's, quite clear, because Luther taught what Paul taught. This Sunday we will be rejoicing in the gift of the clarity of the Word of God that teaches, "that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law" (Romans 3:28). Luther's clear teaching in this regard is why I am a Lutheran and that's the theme for this Reformation Sunday. It's a big day!
