From the Pastor
The fourth evangelist uses the words "lifted up"  in a unique way to indicate the suffering and death of Christ on the cross. The image of "lifting up the snake" evokes fear, suffering, and death because that very act reminds us about the suffering and death inflicted upon the people of Israel by the fiery serpents.  The "lifting up" of Jesus on the cross is more horrific because it not only reminds us about the suffering and death, but also carrying the entire burden of sin inflicted upon him on behalf of humanity.  Unlike the bronze serpent, the person "lifted up" on the cross was God's very own Son, who allowed himself to be consumed by death! That's why in this Lenten tide, we look at the suffering and death of Christ with great awe, believing that Christ's  "lifting up" on the Cross has also given way to his final "lifting up" which is His resurrection and exaltation!
