Looking Forward to the Last Day
This coming Sunday is the Last Sunday of the church year.   The typical theme for the Last Sunday is the return of Jesus to judge the living in the dead.  However, when we look to this Sunday's Gospel reading, we do not see the Last Day.  Instead, we see the day of Jesus' death.  How can this be?  Did someone make a mistake?  Not at all.  The reason for the reading is this: on the day of our Lord's crucifixion, we see Jesus taking all the sins of the world into his flesh and then receiving the penalty due to sin.  With Jesus' death, it is as if our Lord went to the Last Day, pronounced judgment against human sin, and then received the punishment due to sinners.  Because Jesus has already received the punishment in our place, we can now look forward to the Last Day without fear.
