We're all fans of Latin here at Memorial. So, let's do a little of it as we reflect upon our theme this coming Sunday, "solus Christus". "Solus Christus" is in the subject or nominative case. The subject case identifies the one who does the action. It's literally translated as "Christ alone" or "Christ only". It's the only sola in the subject case; the rest of the "solae" are in what the Headmaster calls the "ablative" or "the everything case," and are properly translated with the preposition "by." So we say "by faith alone," "by grace alone," and "by Scripture alone;" but this week simply say "Christ alone."
Why all this fuss about grammar? It's not simply to make the headmaster happy (though it might do just that) but because Christ is the subject, as in this school year's motto, "angularis lapis Christus est." We don't put Christ in the "ablative" case, or really in any other case but the subject case, because Christ is always the subject. He's the one doing all the action, all the saving, all the dying, all the rising, and everything else it takes to make you His own.
We are always putting Christ to our own use. We want to be the subjects who use Christ and use him however we'd like. Maybe I use Jesus for good advice, or for a little grace to get by, or as an advocate for my personal opinions. In none of these is Christ in the nominative or subject case; unless Jesus is running the show, then we have the wrong Jesus. The Reformation put Jesus back in the driver's seat and put us back on the receiving of all his promises. So let us give thanks to the Father for the work of our Savior, and for the expertise of good Latinists! Soli Christo Gloria!
