Life is under assault in our country. Three states have legalized physician-assisted suicide: Oregon, Washington, and Vermont. Others, including California, are contemplating statutes that are similar. How did we get here? Simple: our society has adopted a radically different worldview from previous generations. The number one ruling value of our culture is human health, and the attendant desire for life free from suffering. Suffering is to be alleviated at any cost, including the death of the sufferer. If you want to stop all human suffering, you can simply rid the world of humans. Of course, this is an absurd argument, but one that highlights the radicalness of this worldview. Some years ago I comforted a son who was grieving for the suffering of his dying father. The son finally said to me, "Pastor, we have to do something. I can't stand this anymore!" To which I quietly replied, "You mean we need to put your father out of your misery." Personal freedom (religion, speech, association, etc.) is no longer the goal of our society but freedom from all suffering. This is diametrically opposed to the Christian worldview that sees the moral significance of sacrifice and its attendant suffering because Christ suffered. At Lent we are brought face to face with the suffering of Christ as a sign of the Christian worldview.
