Weekly Newsletter of Memorial Lutheran Church Houston, Texas
13 November 2015
Once again, we are asking for your help in serving our less fortunate brothers and sisters in our Houston community at a Thanksgiving meal at Memorial Lutheran Church this Thanksgiving Day. We will need the help of the entire congregation in order to make this a success. We at Memorial have been abundantly blessed and this is one small way of sharing God's many blessings. If you wish to volunteer, make a donation or want more information please see Wayne Murray at the table in the commons between worship services or contact Wayne or Arlene at home, 281 240 9644, or

From the Pastor
The Day Is Surely Drawing Near My father was killed in a car wreck many years ago in mid-November. I went home and dutifully played the part of the son, who is a pastor, able to direct a funeral for a beloved father. I hadn't really grieved for my loss. My grief rolled over me at the most inopportune time: in the pulpit at early service on the first Sunday I was back. It was the last Sunday of the church year. I was overcome not only by my sense of sorrow over my loss, but also the way in which mortality slaps you in the face when the generation before you goes to see Jesus face-to-face. The great judgment texts judged me. I wept in the presence of my congregation. They understood. They too had sorrows and griefs. And they encouraged me with the peace of God that surpasses human understanding. The day is surely drawing near for us all.
Memorial Lutheran Church will host the 8th annual Thanksgiving meal for the homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Along with the meal we will be distributing much needed items to these people.
These are the needed items: * Toothbrush/Tooth paste * Shampoo/Conditioner * Soap * Socks * Deodorant * Comb * Hats/Coats/Gloves * Adult and child size clothing * Disposable razors/Shaving cream * Blankets (these are always the favorite) * Small bags of chips, cookies, snack type things (all need to be individually packaged and sealed)
Please drop items by the church office by Friday, 20 November 2015.
If you have suggestions about things that you'd like to see in the Memorial Messenger, please let the office staff know. We would love to hear from you.
