The Great Monster
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
As the church year comes to an end, there seems to be no end to grave warnings and gloomy apocalyptic images. In contemplating the end times and the supposed "requirements" for salvation, it can be easy to look to the future with fear, as if staring up at a great big monster wishing only our annihilation. What are we to do then? How do we face this great big creature?
As it turns out, this great monster is us. We try to take salvation into our own hands and obtain it. However, it has already been won for us by Jesus. So we can defeat this great foe by arming ourselves as Paul instructs; with the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of hope of salvation. With these armaments given to us by the Holy Spirit through the Word and Sacraments, we are made invincible in Christ our Lord.

Sunday's Scripture Lessons

Pr. Murray was in Denver visiting with the leaders of the Rocky Mountain District (RMD) of the LCMS on Sunday and Monday of this week. These are convention mandated visits to set a good example to Pastors, Circuit Visitors, and District Presidents, who should all be visiting the congregations and pastors of our church body on a regular basis. The meeting was very friendly and good discussions occurred between the LCMS Synod representatives, Pr. Herb Mueller (1st VP), Pastor Murray, and leaders of the RMD. Ultimately, as church leaders, we are trying to model God's own way of doing things: "Lord God of Israel has visited and redeemed his people" (Luke 1:68). He did this by sending His Son to bear the sins of the world. The leaders and people of the RMD certainly sent their fraternal greetings to the people of MLC, which is well-known throughout the LCMS.
