VOLUNTEER SUNDAY

Sunday 14 September 2014

9:45 AM- 10:45 AM

Plan to bring your family to the Volunteer Sunday event during Sunday school hour in the Fellowship Hall.  This is a great way for you to learn about the opportunities to serve your church and to have fellowship with your peers here at MLC.  Come and introduce yourself to board and committee members and other service leaders at MLC.  Rejoice in the ability to use your time and talents to the glory of God.

If you should have any questions, please contact Jeff Pernoud at [email protected].

We appreciate your support!

From the Pastor
Holy Cross Day

In this Sunday's Gospel reading for Holy Cross Day, some men ask to see Jesus.  Of course, they were standing nearby and could see him.  What they really wanted was to meet him, to know him.   Upon hearing the request, Jesus responds not by going to the men, but by describing his death by crucifixion.  What was the point?  If one wishes to truly see Jesus, one wishes to truly know Jesus, then one must go to the Holy Cross and there consider the meaning of our Lord's suffering and death for us and for our salvation.  Knowing and trusting in the crucified (and risen) Savior is to know our Lord as he desires.  Blessed Holy Cross Day!

Sunday's Scripture Lessons

Old Testament: Numbers 21:4-9

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

Gospel: John 12:20-33

Replacement of Paraments
We are seeking to replace all of our paraments starting with our Advent Paraments this fall. Our paraments are starting to show their age. In particular, our Advent paraments are currently blue and we are replacing them with the more traditional violet paraments. We hope to order the Advent paraments by the end of September 2014 as they require about 8 weeks to be made and Advent will be here before we know it. Our goal is $8,000 to replace the full Advent set of chasuble, stoles, altar paraments, the veil, the burse, and 2 banners. If you can help with reaching our goal, please write your checks to MLC with the memo line "Advent Paraments" or if you have any questions, please contact Martha Fredenburg at:
Because You Asked

Why do we go to Nicaragua and what do we do when we get there? Memorial Lutheran Church has been going to Nicaragua under the leadership of our member, John Coulter, for more than 10 years. We serve a new Lutheran church body founded by one of our partner churches, Lutheran Church-Canada (the church Pastor Murray comes from). We go there to give physical aid: building churches, parsonages, school buildings, painting, etc. We also share spiritual support by teaching church music and showing our solidarity with a struggling church. Pastor Murray has also taught the pastors and vicars of the church. He offered lectures on the Lord's Supper over about 16 hours in June. You should plan to join our group in Summer 2015. It is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. John Coulter can tell you all about it. Ask him.
If you have suggestions about things that you'd like to see in the Memorial Messenger, please let the office staff know. We would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Scott R. Murray
