From the Pastor
What We See

While communing on Tuesday morning from the hand of Pastor Heine I considered the fact that our communion bread is not seen by communicants. So why worry about what is embossed on it? Some host have crosses, some the crucifix, and some nothing at all. It occurred to me that the image on the host is most for the benefit of those who distribute it, so that it is clear what we are distributing and who it is that gives it. From the communicants the image is hidden, but the substance is there. In this same way we are hidden with God in the things that He sets on our altar by His powerful Word. So Paul says, "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Col 3:2-3). Our Christian life is hidden with Christ. So our seeing of Him is not as important as His seeing of us. Lord Jesus, let me be hidden in You! Amen.

Sunday's Scripture Lessons

Old Testament: Jeremiah 15:15-21

Epistle: Romans 12:9-21

Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28

Replacement of Paraments
We are seeking to replace all of our paraments starting with our Advent Paraments this fall. Our paraments are starting to show their age. In particular, our Advent paraments are currently blue and we are replacing them with the more traditional violet paraments. We hope to order the Advent paraments by the end of September 2014 as they require about 8 weeks to be made and Advent will be here before we know it. Our goal is $8,000 to replace the full Advent set of chasuble, stoles, altar paraments, the veil, the burse, and 2 banners. If you can help with reaching our goal, please write your checks to MLC with the memo line "Advent Paraments" or if you have any questions, please contact Martha Fredenburg at:
Because You Asked
This space will be dedicated to questions that are offered by the congregation. This great suggestion was offered by Nina Skinner. She asked, "What do the red marks on the baptismal candle mean?" These marks are called "incense nails." The five nails have grains of incense embedded in red wax at their heads. The incense represents the aromatic spices brought by Mary Magdalene and the other women to anoint the body of Jesus at the tomb. The nails themselves, with their heads of red wax, represent the five major wounds of our Lord's crucifixion: head, two hands, feet, and side. Next Week: Why Sweden?
If you have suggestions about things that you'd like to see in the Memorial Messenger, please let the office staff know. We would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Scott R. Murray
