Where is the Body?
The great commotion begins in our gospel text when people are unable to find the body of Jesus. The missing body gradually paves the way to the great Easter joy that victory has been won over the devil and salvation has been accomplished for humanity. This reality is hard for some in our gospel story to believe! They have to hear the previous words of Jesus again in order to digest the reality of resurrection. Yes, hearing the word of God gives people the gift of faith! Proof does not produce faith. Actually, nobody has seen with his eyes what happened to the body of Jesus. The body doesn't make the resurrection but the absence! The absence of the body means that he rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God. This is what one of our chief Lutheran symbols faithfully confesses, "The resurrection of the body and the life everlasting." We rejoice and celebrate this Pascal Feast because the Paschal Lamb has been slain! God the Son rose from the dead! Just because He rose, we too will rise again on the last day! So, with ease we say, "He is risen! He is risen Indeed." Amen.
