NEW COMMUNION SILVER TO BE DEDICATED THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we will dedicate our new hand-hammered communion silver service. It will include two chalices, two patens (plates), a flagon (pitcher), and a ciborium (container). The artist is Ken Schmidt of Austin, who was trained at the Cranbrook Institute. Each piece has been fashioned from Argentium silver, which is 9.30 Silver with the Germanium. You can learn about the artistic process and the theological meaning behind this communion set in the commons between services, when Dr. Schmidt will talk about his work. The silver will be dedicated at both services and used for the first time at both communions.

By What Authority?

In Sunday's Gospel, people challenge Jesus' teaching and works on the basis of authority.  If Jesus lacks the proper authority or has an untrustworthy authority, Jesus may be dismissed.  All of Jesus' teaching and works come to us bearing the authority of God for, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit, Jesus is God.  His activities do not merely coincide with those of another.  They are God's teaching and works done among us.  What this means is we never have to wonder whether Jesus got

the message right.  We never have to wonder if his works actually accomplished anything.  Our Lord's teaching and works may be trusted and received with great joy because they come from God.

Replacement of Paraments
We are seeking to replace all of our paraments starting with our Advent Paraments this fall. Our paraments are starting to show their age. In particular, our Advent paraments are currently blue and we are replacing them with the more traditional violet paraments. We have placed the order and they should be ready by Advent. We have raised enough to replace the full Advent set of chasuble, stoles, dalmatics, altar paraments, the veil, and burse. Please write your checks to MLC with the memo line "Advent Paraments" or if you have any questions, please contact Martha Fredenburg at:
Because You Asked

While in St. Louis over the past week, Pastor Murray was privileged to chair a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Luther Academy. The Luther Academy promotes genuine, confessional Lutheran theology and research through conferences, scholarly exchanges, and publications that assist the church both to preserve and to proclaim to the world the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the only saving faith. This was an exciting meeting because the Academy welcomed its new Executive Director, Dr. Robert Bennett, who is settling the LA office in Fort Wayne, IN. We also met with the Fellows of the Academy, who are leading the conferences in the various world areas in which the LA has invitations to work. They told exciting stories about their work and its fabulous impact. Please pray for the work of the Luther Academy.
If you have suggestions about things that you'd like to see in the Memorial Messenger, please let the office staff know. We would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Scott R. Murray
