Principal's Message
Deborah Bulkley
Dear Parents,

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Patricia Haynes will become Memorial Elementary School's next principal on July 1. Dr. Haynes brings a deep understanding of teaching and leadership employing best practices and effective curriculum and instructional strategies to serve a wide range of student learning needs.

Dr. Haynes began her education career in New Britain, Connecticut as a high school science teacher, but went on to expand her experience through teaching kindergarten, 5th grade,  and middle school science.   She was selected as the assistant principal of Torrington Middle School before becoming the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Torrington, Connecticut.  While working in Torrington, Patty also earned her Ph.D. in Education from Capella University, specializing in Curriculum and Instruction.

Patty moved to New Hampshire three years ago with her husband and began working as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Milford.  For the past two years, Dr. Haynes has served as the principal at Dr. Crisp Elementary School in Nashua, NH.  She clearly brings a wealth of knowledge to her practice and we are excited to have her join our staff at Memorial School.

Patty has three grown sons and outside of school she spends her free time enjoying patio gardening, cooking healthy recipes, and vacationing at different beaches.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Patricia Haynes to Newton.
Principal for the Day
Being principal of a school is a big job, just ask Emily!  She won the privilege of being Principal for a day at the PTO's annual spaghetti dinner  this past March.  Emily is in Mrs. Kaminski's second grade class.  Her day began by doing the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by assisting with our CARES assembly.

She continued her busy day with important paperwork, having lunch bunch, and taking a meeting with Mrs. Bulkley.

She finished her day by announcing the birthday students of the week and waving good bye to students at the end of the day.

Thank you Emily, you did an amazing job being the Principal of Memorial School!
Hero Art
On Thursday, April 20th , the staff and students of Memorial school witnessed the incredible talent, and listened intently to the inspirational message, of Rob Surette, Amazing Hero Art.  During a school-wide assembly, Rob delivered his message of "Be Somebody" to all while exhibiting his amazing artistic talent.  His examples of how turning the negatives, into positives, completely changes the outcome of any situation left a lasting impression on all.  We owe a debt of gratitude to our Memorial School PTO for sponsoring  Amazing Hero Art and for purchasing Rob's  artistic rendition of Albert Einstein that we will proudly display.

News from 4th Grade
Fourth grade students have recently completed a science unit on how the Earth changes over time.  Students had the opportunity to solve a real world problem related to erosion.  Students first worked with groups to research ways to slow the rate of erosion.  They then collaborated to come up with three possible solutions.  Next they had the chance to test their solutions, using a stream table and materials of their choice.  It was exciting to see such a high level of engagement as they applied what they had they had learned in the unit, and also the new discoveries they made along the way.

Ticks & Lyme Disease
Now that the weather is getting nice we are spending more time outdoors! Great! But be on the lookout for ticks, especially black-legged ticks that carry lyme disease and other diseases. They are most active April through October and New Hampshire has one of the highest incidence rates of lyme disease in the country.

Preventing Tick Bites:
Avoid Direct Contact with Ticks
  • Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
  • Walk in the center of trails.
Repel Ticks with DEET or Permethrin
  • Use repellents that contain 20 to 30% DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours. Always follow product instructions. Parents should apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth.
  • Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5% permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pre-treated clothing is available and may provide longer-lasting protection.
  • Other repellents registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may be found at Insect Repellents: Use and Effectiveness.
Find and Remove Ticks from Your Body
  • Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.
  • Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. Parents should check their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and especially in their hair.
  • Examine gear and pets. Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats, and day packs.
  • Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks. (Some research suggests that shorter drying times may also be effective, particularly if the clothing is not wet.
Tick removal:
If you find a tick attached to your skin, there's no need to panic. Several tick removal devices are available on the market, but a plain set of fine-tipped tweezers will remove a tick effectively.

How to remove a tick
  1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible.
  2. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.
  3. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.
  4. Dispose of a live tick by submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers.

Follow-up
If you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick, see your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor about your recent tick bite, when the bite occurred, and where you most likely acquired the tick.

Mud Season
Parents, mud season is upon us!   As the temperatures climb and rain comes, there is more slush and puddles on our playground area.  You are asked to send in a change of clothing for your child to keep in the cubby here at school in the event that they "find' a puddle and become soaked.  Clean dry slacks, shirt, underwear and socks should be in a bag labeled with your child's name and grade.  Thank you for preparing your child for weather changes and outdoor play at school.

Immunization Requirements for Fifth grade students:
Please be advised that when your child is age 11 years or older, and it has been 5 years or longer since their last Tetanus toxoid-containing immunization, they must receive a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.  If your child has a documented medical contraindication to pertussis vaccine, a Td booster is acceptable.  In addition, every child entering grade 6 must have had (2) doses of Varicella vaccine (chicken pox).  If your child had the disease of chicken pox, this must be listed with the date of the disease on a recent physical history and exam form completed by your child's health care provider.  If your child is 11 years old, and has already received these immunizations, please provide a copy of the latest physical exam and updated immunization record to the health office as soon as possible.  This may be faxed to the school nurse at 603-382-1466. If your child has a well-child visit scheduled within this school year, please discuss these requirements with the doctor at the time of the visit, and provide a copy of this physical and updated immunization record to the school nurse.

Medication Pick Up
As the end of the year is coming, I'd like to remind all parents that if your child has medications in the health office they need to be picked up by the end of the school year. The last day to pick them up will be June 19th. After June 19th all medications left in the health office will be discarded.

Thank you,
Cindy Cole, RN
