Important Reminders
We want to remind parents about a few important  things!
  1. Student drop off is up at the horseshoe drive, located in the front of the building.  For safety reasons, please do not drop them off in the lobby.
  2. Please do not drop your child off before 8:30 AM, staff is not available to watch students.
  3. If your child is going to arrive after the 8:40 AM bell, it is of the utmost importance that you contact the school to let us know.
Thank you for your help keeping our students safe!
Principal's Message
Dr. Haynes
We had our open house here at Memorial last week and the turnout was spectacular! Nearly 200 families came in Thursday evening to visit the classrooms and take part in the puzzle challenge. I was so happy to be able to meet parents and family members.

One very noticeable aspect of our open house was the level of enthusiasm of the students, as shown in the photos of the event. They were so excited and eager to take their family members through the building to show them their work as well as the many places in which they learn new things. This enthusiasm is not rare at Memorial, though. It's something I see every day as I walk around the building and talk to the students. There is always a happy buzz in the building with rich discussions going on at all levels from Pre K and Kindergarten to grade 5. They are excited to be learning and work very diligently in their classes.

Last week, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos went on a school tour intended to bring attention to schools with innovative approaches to learning. She pointed out that nationally many students experience school as a "mundane malaise"; there is nothing really exciting about school the way it is traditionally structured.  She called for educators to "rethink school", asking districts to champion personalized learning as a way to foster a love of learning.

Personalized learning is  exactly what are doing at Memorial, and have been building on for many years, as reflected in our vision of "learning for all". I strongly believe that it is this focus on personalized learning that raises the enthusiasm I see in our classrooms every day. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to our work, and the evidence is on the faces of our students.  Your support of learning means everything to us at Memorial and we will continue to develop unique and meaningful learning activities for our students. We look forward to sharing these experiences with you as the year continues.

Invitation to have Coffee with Superintendent Ambrose
You are cordially invited to have coffee with Superintendent Tom Ambrose on Monday, September 25th from 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM in the Memorial School library or Tuesday, September 26th from 6:00 - 7:00 PM at the Sanborn Regional Middle School.

Mr. Ambrose looks forward to meeting everyone and answering any questions you might have!

Please join us!!

School Nurse
From the Nurse
End 68 Hours of Hunger
Because of the great efforts of people in our community, we will have a weekend food program again this year for students in need. On Friday afternoons students who are participating in the program will get a bag of food to take home that will support their nutritional needs over the weekend. More information can be found at www.end68hoursofhunger.org or you can call the health office at school. This is a fully confidential program, all names are kept private.

If this is a program that would be helpful to your family please contact the school nurse for more information. This program can be joined at any time, so if you find that there is a need later in the school year, just let the school nurse know.

We have a food drive collection box in our lobby at all times. Any donations are greatly appreciated. The program is always in need of non-perishable items such as tuna, pasta, peanut butter, cereals, crackers, etc.

Food Allergy Reminders
Please remember to give 24 hours' notice prior to bringing in food for classroom parties or birthdays. We have several students with food allergies and we want to make our class parties both fun and safe for all of our students. Classroom teachers are well informed about the food allergies of students in their class. As a general rule, please refrain from sending in foods containing any nuts or nut butters. There are also children with allergies to some fruits as well as dairy and gluten sensitivities.  If you have any questions about a certain food or party item feel free to call or e-mail Nurse Cindy in the health office.

Reminders
I have not received a Sanborn Regional School Emergency Form for each student yet. These forms need to be updated yearly in order to be valid. They cover emergency contact information as well as permission for the school to administer a few basic medications. The forms are available in the main office and on the SAU 17 web site.

Upcoming Flu Season
Flu season is approaching.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states the single best way to prevent your child from contracting the flu virus is to get them vaccinated every year. Vaccines are available in pharmacies and in doctor's offices;  the ideal time to get vaccinated is in October. Signs of the flu include fever, chills, body aches, cough, and fatigue. If your child has a temp of over 100.0F

Memorial School provides a variety of technology tools for learning, whether in the classroom, gym, library, or the new STEAM lab. So that everyone has full access to the many sound-based activities, we ask that each student bring a set of headphones (please, no earbuds ) for their individual use in school.

For those children who are not able to bring their own to school, we will continue to provide school-owned headphones.

Please contact Jodi Tamayoshi at [email protected] with any questions.

News from the Reading Specialist
Congratulations to the following students who completed the Build a Better World Summer Reading Challenge. They are Shelby C., Maddy D., Thomas C., Caitlin M., Taylor C., Rebecca M., Riley A., Sam A., and Gabby S. They will each receive an Outstanding Reader Award!
Summer reading  is so important, not just to complete a challenge, but to develop a habit of lifelong reading. We read for a variety of purposes: to learn something new; to confirm what we think we already know; to be entertained; to escape into another world or time; to complete a project or assignment; to relax; to share interests  with others, and more. Reading helps your brain to grow and helps you develop as a person.
Our job is to help our children develop as independent readers who initiate reading on their own and find it an essential part of life. As parent you have a special role in this process. Children value what their parents' value and they learn from what they see their parents' do. Some questions to think about:
Do your children see you read and write for different purposes?
Is there a time in your home that everyone reads?
Do you have reading material easily available such as books, magazines, newspapers, fliers, comics, cereal boxes, digital resources such as Epic?
Please join us in our goal this year to develop independent readers and writers.
Thank you,
Dr. Joyce Corbin
