Principal's Message
Jonathan G. Vander Els

Dear Memorial Community:

I would like to begin by thanking Amie LeMay and our Memorial PTO for spearheading a great day with the entire community on September 20th.  On that Saturday, we celebrated Newton Town Day, as well as the festivities associated with our Memorial PTO 5K.  The different opportunities for kids and families were incredible and it was an enjoyable day for all (even if some of us had to go in the dunk tank!).  Thank you for your hard work to make this event possible for everyone.

The work of many of our parents and volunteers on the 20th was indicative of the work that goes on at Memorial School throughout the year and is a big reason why I am once again able to share that Memorial School and its volunteers were recognized by the State of New Hampshire's Department of Education and the New Hampshire Partners in Education as a Blue Ribbon School.  Blue Ribbon schools are identified by their "outstanding volunteerism" and our recognized annually.

Additionally, Memorial School was recognized in conjunction with our Newton Police Department and Newton Fire Department with the Gold Circle Award.  The Gold Circle Award recognizes schools and business affiliates who demonstrate "exemplary educational relationships" within their community.

We are proud to share this recognition with the Newton Fire Department and the Newton Police Department, as we value the working relationship we have developed as we all strive to keep kids safe.

Finally, we look forward to inducting our 2014-2015 student council representatives next Thursday, October 9th at 2:00 PM in our Memorial Gym.  Please feel free to join us for this assembly to recognize our councilors as well as those students receiving CARES!

                                         Best regards,

 Jonathan G. Vander Els, Principal

MAP Testing through NWEA
By:  Donna B. Johnson, Assistant Principal

Students in grades K - 5 at Memorial School are currently participating in Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment through NWEA.   Each web-based assessment in the areas of language, reading and math creates a personalized experience by adapting to each student's learning level. Our youngest students in grades K and 1 use headsets to hear the questions read to them in a very interactive manner.

Assessment data and essential information about what each student knows is available to teachers within 24 hours.   Teachers at Memorial School utilize the results of the MAP assessments along with other formative and summative classroom assessments to plan for intervention and enrichment for each child.

Because the computerized testing format mirrors the state's Smarter Balanced Assessment, our students in grades 3 - 5 will be well prepared when the test is administered in the Spring of 2015. Questions about NWEA testing may be directed to your child's teacher or Mrs. Johnson.

Memorial School Staff Members Present at State Conference

Three of our Memorial staff members, along with Principal Jonathan Vander Els, were invited to present at the New Hampshire School Administrators' Association and Department of Education Conference on Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment last Thursday, September 24th in Concord, NH.

Third grade teacher Bonnie Banyas, fifth grade teacher Terry Bolduc, and kindergarten teacher Jennifer Manning (all pictured below) shared the work they have been doing building Quality Performance Assessments in their classrooms with their teams.  This presentation was representative of the work all of our teachers have been engaged in related to assessment and building our assessment literacy at Memorial School and within our district. Teachers, administrators, superintendents, and NH DOE staff from our state were all in attendance.

 Well-done, Memorial Teachers!

Enterovirus D68

Below is an informational sheet put out by the NH Department of Health and Human Services this week. We DO NOT have any CONFIRMED cases (by the DHHS) of this illness at our school; this is an informational notice only.

LICE

The fall is a common time for lice to be found in school age children. Head lice are a common nuisance for children aged 3-11. Every year there are 6-12 million cases of head lice infestation in the United States. They are an annoyance, causing itching and mild discomfort to the person but they do not spread disease. They are spread most commonly through head to head contact and less commonly through shared clothing, bedding and carpeting, or hair articles such as combs and barrettes or headbands. Pets do not spread lice; the lice are adept to human hair only.

If your child has lice contact their pediatrician for advice on treatment options.

Treatment for lice consists of using a pesticide (bug killing) or ovacide (egg killing) shampoo. Most shampoos do not kill all the nits (eggs) but will create an inhospitable environment for lice if they hatch. It is usually recommended to treat on day one and day nine in order to kill any lice that may have hatched from the eggs. After shampooing, do not use conditioner or wash hair again for two days, this lets the medication work. Washing or conditioning hair after treatment can make the medication ineffective. There are some repellant techniques and natural remedies as well but these have not been proven or researched as well as the shampoos currently on the market.

Keeping hair back and up as well as not sharing hats and hair accessories is the best way to prevent the spread of lice.  Lice are very small, they are sometimes clear or tan colored. The nits are very tiny and cement themselves to the hair shaft about inch away from the scalp. The way to tell if it is a nit and not dandruff is that dandruff is easily moved or flaked off where the nits are very difficult to remove from the hair.

Please let the health office know if your child has lice. For more information and helpful tips go to:

www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head

FOOD ALLERGY REMINDER

Please remember to give 24 hours' notice prior to bringing in food for classroom parties or birthdays. We have several students with food allergies and we want to make our class parties both fun and safe for all of our students. Classroom teachers are well informed about the food allergies of students in their class. As a general rule, please refrain from sending in foods containing any nuts or nut butters. There are also children with allergies to some fruits as well as dairy and gluten sensitivities. If you have any questions about a certain food or party item feel free to call Ms. O'Sullivan in the health office. Thank you!

2013-2014 FLU SEASON AND IMMUNIZATION

Flu season is here. All New Hampshire residents over the age of 6 months old are encouraged to receive a flu shot unless medically contraindicated. Your doctor's office has immunizations available as well as local pharmacies including Wal-Mart.

Please send a doctor's note to the school nurse with the date of your child's flu immunization, so that it may be added to their health record.

Signs of the flu include fever, chills, body aches, cough, and fatigue. If your child has a temp of over 100.0F they are not permitted to be in school and need to be fever free without the use of Tylenol or any fever reducer for 24 hours. As always, our best defense against the flu is good hand washing!

For more information about the flu virus, symptoms, and treatment visit: www.cdc.gov/flu

Thank you,

Memorial Student Ella Bergeron Entered for State Scholarship with her Winning Cabbage Entry
Written By:  Donna Johnson
In 2002, Bonnie Plants started the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program with a mission to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people. Each spring, they distribute more than one million free cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country including each of the 3rd grade classes at Memorial School. As part of the program, Bonnie Plants awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state.

"The joy of gardening and the satisfaction of growing healthy food are gifts that kids never outgrow," says Stan Cope, President and CEO of Bonnie Plants. "We're grateful for the opportunity to share these gifts with the next generation of gardeners."

This year's Memorial School winner is Ella Bergeron, pictured above with her cabbage which weighed in at over 10 pounds! Ella's winning cabbage will be entered for the $1000 New Hampshire scholarship! Congratulations, Ella, on a job well done!

GRADE 5 FIELD TRIPS

We are very excited about our upcoming field trips here in grade 5. Both of the trips are coming up in the next few weeks. The Mt. Kearsarge hiking trip will be on Wednesday, October 15th, and the trip to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum is scheduled for Tuesday November 4th.

The hike up Mt. Kearsarge will start at Winslow State Park in Wilton, NH. We plan on hiking up on the Barlow Trail, and down on the Winslow Trail. The round trip is just over 2 miles, and there are beautiful views of the surrounding area at the top. The students will gain some firsthand knowledge of various landforms in the area, as well as see geological evidence of the glaciers that had once covered the region. This field trip is weather dependent, so if the forecast is for steady rain, the field trip will be rescheduled. Students will need a ride to school for this trip. They need to be at the school at 7:50 for attendance to be taken. We need to be on the bus ready to leave by 8:00 to be sure to arrive home for the buses at dismissal time. Parents are welcome to join us in Wilton for the hike. Restrooms are available at the base of the mountain, and the parking fee is waived at this time of the year.

Our second field trip is to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum to allow the students to see what our founding fathers may have gone through at the start of the Revolutionary War. Students will experience interactive displays, actors in period costumes, and artifacts from that time period as well as a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party. While we do not intend to limit the number of parents that may attend this trip, parents interested in attending this field trip will need to be sure to return permission slips promptly in order for the school to secure any additional reservations needed.

For more information visit their website at www.bostonteapartyship.com.

More information will be sent home with your child about both of these upcoming field trips as we get closer to them. Feel free to contact your child's teacher if there are any questions.

Students and teachers will receive their updated lists of usernames & passwords next week!

You will find these exciting additions at
https://sites.google.com/a/sau17.net/library-googleapps-site/lists-of-books-by-themes/online-subscriptions   Watch for your student to bring home their new Username & Password sheets, and be sure to keep it by your home computer.

Please have your children bring back their summer reading books! Lots more students here would love to read them!

Thanks!

For First-Grade Parents

In the coming weeks, the first-grade classes will come to the Library Media Center to borrow books. For the first half of the school year, they will practice keeping them in their classroom to read, then return them on their next visit. We want to give them practice being responsible library patrons.
The goal is to send them home with library books in the second half of the school year, and to have them aware of their responsibility to return them.

For now, please encourage your child's library use and their excitement about their books: ask them about the books they so excitedly chose; you will be really pleased!

End 68 Hours of Hunger

Good Day,

We had a very busy summer and are proud to report that we raised just under $4000 in ticket sales from the Ping Pong Ball Fundraiser brought in. We also collected just under $1000 between cash donations and candle sales from candles generously donated by Kelly Gannett owner of Soy Solas Candles and Wicks in Whimsies in East Kingston. Thank you to everyone that helped make this fundraiser a success.

Last weekend the Tedford family of Newton hosted a fundraiser at the Hen House with raffle and ticket sales which brought in just under $1500. Thank you to the Tedford Family.

Since we introduced the program to our community in May there has been many inquiries on how folks can help us. We will be holding two informational meetings which volunteers can come get a tour of our storage space and potentially sign up to join a team. Many opportunities are flexible and you can give as little as an hour per week. We are looking for volunteers interested in shopping for food, unloading food from vehicles, stocking and rotating foods, bagging food, delivering food, picking up donations from local drop offs, fundraising, letter writing and more. This is simply way too much work for two program coordinators to handle. There is no doubt that in order for this program to succeed we need lots of helping hands. We have two meetings scheduled; we felt that offering an afternoon meeting and an evening meeting would allow some flexibility to all volunteers.

Sanborn Ends 68 Hours of Hunger is a private, not-for-profit, volunteer effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive in school on Monday morning.

Childhood hunger is a national problem. It occurs when children receive insufficient food on a regular basis. After a while, these children also experience "fear of hunger" that affects their behavior as much as physical hunger affects their body. We provide a bag filled with food items to those children to sustain them over the weekend. In doing so, the children's nutritional needs can be met week to week.

Food donations can be dropped off at any of the Sanborn Schools in Newton and Kingston and at Wicks and Whimsies 14 Main St, East Kingston, NH 03827.
