Principal's Message
Jonathan G. Vander Els

Good afternoon,

It was a busy week-before-vacation, but what a great week it was...  In addition to five days of Spirit Week themes, we welcomed twenty-three guest readers to participate in "Our Community of Readers."  This included administrators from around our district, school board members, Newton's first responders, librarians and a selectman, former teachers, and friends of Memorial.  Please see more information and a slide show of our readers below in Ms. Emery's article.  Thank you to everyone who participated in this-it was great to have you all reading in our school.

We also wrapped up the student council's Penny Drive last Monday.  The organization we supported this year, the Jimmy Fund, will receive a check for over $1,000.00 on behalf of Memorial School and our community.  Thank you so much to everyone for the incredible support demonstrated during this year's fundraiser, and thank you to our student council for spearheading this drive.

On Thursday afternoon we were proud to recognize 21 students during our CARES assembly (above).  We feel it is very important to recognize the great things that many of our students are doing on a daily basis, and these assemblies provide us an opportunity to celebrate kids and the ways in which they are models for others.

Speaking of amazing, our Glee Club performed during our assembly, as well.  Our Glee Club (below) has been practicing hard for their upcoming concert next month.  Their concert will be on May 22nd at 7:30 PM and will wrap up our "Celebration of Learning."  This celebration will be a chance for students to bring their parents to our school and share some of the great work they have been doing over the course of this school year.  It will begin at 6:30 PM.  We hope you can join us!

We hope you have a wonderful Spring Vacation!

Reading News:  By Ms. Karen Emery
"Our Community of Readers" week was a special one, as we welcomed members from the Newton Police and Fire Departments, Selectmen/women, School board members, along with other school administrators to visit each classroom with their favorite book to share with our students.  Please check out the slideshow below showing our guests reading to Memorial students.  Many thanks to all who took time out of their schedules to celebrate their love for reading as they demonstrated the importance of reading each and every day!

Community of Readers
Community of Readers

With summer just around the corner it is important to continue reading to and with your child(ren) to promote lifelong learning.  Model good reading habits by having your child see you read.  Whether reading books, magazines, the newspaper or even articles online, showing that reading is everywhere is an important message to give your child.  If you have any questions about what you should be doing with your child, please do not hesitate to contact the classroom teacher.  He/She knows your child's reading level, strengths and weaknesses and can suggest appropriate activities to do with your child to enhance comprehension.  Have fun with the books you read together; just keep on reading!

Get a sneak peek at our summer reading list by joining the PTO fundraiser at the Salem Barnes and Noble on Route 28 on May 16th.  There will be fun and games with most of the books from our reading list available to you with proceeds going to the Memorial PTO. More information will be coming soon from our PTO. Click on the link below to find a comprehensive book list, categorized by award winners, age groups, genre, and Lexile levels to choose the just right book for your child to read.

TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL

This is the season for an increase in the number of cases of colds, flu, intestinal and GI viruses, conjunctivitis, and even strep throat and pneumonia.  Parents are asked to consider the following suggestions from the school nurse in order to limit the exposure of healthy children to those who are ill, and to ensure that those who are ill will have as rapid a recovery as possible:

1)      If your child has vomited during the night, keep him/her home for at least another 24 hours until you know that he/she is eating regular foods without difficulty and is no longer experiencing nausea or abdominal pain.  If your child has had more than one episode of diarrhea, especially when accompanied by fever and/or nausea, please consider their comfort level and risk for dehydration, and keep then at home until fever and diarrhea are resolved.

2)      If your child has a persistent cough not controlled by over-the-counter medications, please contact your health care provider, as your child may have an underlying bronchial or lung infection or pneumonia.  Severe cold symptoms, such as sneezing, congestion, and/or nasal drainage can interfere with a child's ability to concentrate and learn and poses a contagion risk to others.

3)      If your child has a fever (100 degrees or above), please keep your child at home for an additional 24 hours of fever-free time (OFF fever-control medicines) to ensure adequate rest and the opportunity for the immune system to recover.  Your child may still be contagious if he/she has a fever at night, but is fever-free in the early morning.

4)      If your child has one or both eyes with a red appearance to the sclera (white area), and/or drainage from the corners which is yellow, and/or yellow crusts on lashes and lids which are itchy and/or swollen, please keep them home and consult your health care provider.  Conjunctivitis is very contagious, and children with this infection must be on medications for a minimum of 24 hours and no longer draining from the eye to attend school.

5)      If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, they must be taking an antibiotic for 24 hours before they may return to school as non-contagious to others.

6)      If your child is experiencing lethargy or irritability with their illness, they will not be feeling well enough to participate in all school activities and are not able to focus in the classroom.

Certain childhood diseases have required exclusion periods to prevent spreading of the disease to the general school population. If you have any questions regarding the advisability of sending your child to school, please call your health care provider or your school nurse.

Frequent hand washing is the number one prevention for the spread of germs and disease within your family as well as in school.  Specific concerns regarding your child's illness, or duration of his/her symptoms should be addressed to your family health care provider.  Certain childhood diseases have required exclusion periods to prevent spreading of the disease to the general school population. If you have any questions regarding the advisability of sending your child to school, please call your health care provider or your school nurse
