Dancing with Nature

May 2017 Issue 3 Vol 7
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

It's that time of year ...... VACATION!
Growing up there was always a summer vacation planned to include my seven siblings and our parents. As rural panhandle Florida physicians, my parents ' practice also included delivering babies so the vacation timing was based on the window of opportunity between births. They would load all of us into the family Land Rover, which had no A/C and a radio only the driver could hear, pulling "the little green trailer" but we were happy as clams, creating a lot of curious stares.   I can only imagine the noise of eight children in one vehicle but my father seemed unfazed as he blazed through mile after mile.

One year we drove all the way to Washington DC. A frequent destination was to Cashiers, NC
which began my love of the mountains at a young age. I remember seeing the tiny waterfalls trickling off of the mountains, the luscious fragrance unique to the area, and the cold swimming waters. I loved it then; I love it now.  So where will your vacation plans take you? I hope your travels bring you to us. Vacation plans for me? Right here. Every day in the mountains is like a vacation :=).

Downtown Waynesville and the surrounding areas have a packed schedule of summer activities waiting for you. In the gallery, meet some of your favorite artists like Margaret Roberts, Jeff Stoner, Jenny Buckner and Sarah Sneeden. Kicking off the summer season Memorial Weekend is Block Party with a lineup of new entertainment. Then there is Appalachian Lifestyle Celebration focusing on mountain heritage lifestyles. So much to see and so much to do. Make your plans now!

Art After Dark
Margaret Roberts
Watercolor Collages

A Waynesville favorite, Margaret Roberts, will be demonstrating at Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday evening, June 2, 6-9PM.   Margaret's torn watercolor paper collages with their vibrant colors reflect her contagious personality.  More of her work can be viewed on our website by clicking on the photo of Margaret or by stopping by the Gallery to browse at your leisure before, during, or after Art After Dark!

Margaret is a voracious learner and teacher of art.  She is constantly studying with other artists as well as teaching and mentoring.  Her home studio is designed with this in mind and is constantly abuzz with activity.

Twenty years ago, Margaret began to explore water-color and has been  developing watercolor collage techniques for several years. She possesses a heightened visual awareness for the beauty of simplicity which is apparent in
her collages, and she delights in the fresh, childlike feel this approach gives to traditional subj ects.

Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional
artists, enjoy music by jazz guitarist Steve Wohlrab and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Spotlight
Jeffrey Stoner
Photographer
Jeffrey says, "My passion is to capture, through photography, the beauty, wonder, and mystery that surrounds."

This passion started early in life with a move to the country. The newness of the landscape to Jeffrey, even as a young child, caught his attention.  He wished for a camera to capture the moment - to capture the feeling and spirit of the scene he is witnessing. His wish for a camera came true when he was ten and to our delight, he has not put it down.

Jeffrey's photography includes wildlife, landscapes and cityscapes. Jeffrey says, "My goal is for others, through my photography, to experience the feeling and spirit of these moments."

Jeffrey is also passionate about sharing his work and his experiences with  others.  He will be in Twigs and Leaves Gallery on Saturday June 10th during the Appalachian Lifestyles Festival to talk about his work and discuss his passion with you.

You may see more of his work by stopping by the Gallery or by clicking on his photo above.
