From Mr. Florence

What an electrifying and busy week we had at Mercer Elementary! We are still filled with excitement from the 2017-18 Mercer Olympics campaign. The grand total was over $19,000. This brings the amount raised in an eight year period to approximately $120,000. We are fortunate to be the benefactors of such generosity from Mercer students and their families. Thank you for your support!

On Tuesday we enjoyed the parade of costumes by students as part of our Halloween festivities. It is fun to see the excitement in the air by students, teachers, parents and guardians. This kind of school based activity contributes to building a strong sense of community. Our Mercer PTO and the Mercer staff do an outstanding job providing programs that bring us together to enjoy and share.

“What inspired you to be an astronaut?” and “How come it’s so hard to get through the earth’s atmosphere?” were the two questions posed by Mercer students Drake McCandlish (4 th Grader in Ms. Martin’s class) and Robbie McCullough (1 st Grader in Mrs. Eakin’s class) to NASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Ricky Arnold via a downlink with the International Space Station on Wednesday. Shaker Heights City Schools were fortunate to take part in this great educational opportunity. To view the amazing NASA-Shaker Heights Schools program go here .

Our students love their recess time, even when the temperatures drop and there is a chill in the air. In order to enjoy this outdoor recreational time, they must be properly dressed for the weather. This includes a warm coat, hat and gloves, and closed toe footwear. When the snowflakes fly (not too soon we hope!) they will need snow boots and snow pants as well. Please send your son or daughter dressed appropriately for outdoor recess and mark all clothing with their names.

As a reminder, there is no school on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7. Have a great week ahead!

Mercer News

THANK YOU MERCER!
Our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Mercer Community! What a wonderful time we had during the Mercer Olympics. Students, teachers, and staff alike took part in various Olympic-themed activities and interactive Physical Education classes, and many classes also learned about the Olympics in their classrooms. If you missed the jaw-dropping announcement at the Closing Ceremony, we once again celebrated 100% participation with over $19,000 raised! As a result of everyone’s hard work and generosity, our school can continue to provide our students with the various extra-curricular events and education-enrichments that have become Mercer staples. Our deepest thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen. It has been a delight to see everyone embrace the feeling of “I BELIEVE THAT MERCER WINS!”
Special thanks to our amazing Mercer Olympics Co-Chairs: Emelye Crehore, Kris Gobel, and Angela Lind.

Astsonia: Digital Art Portfolios
Mercer is going to start using Artsonia ( https://www.artsonia.com/ ) to create digital art portfolios for the 2017-2018 school year! Please look for a letter next week in your child's take-home folder that will have directions for signing up online! Each student will have an online gallery with his or her art work starting with this school year until they graduate from Mercer! It is a great way to showcase and share students' creativity, art knowledge, and developing art skills! Please email Ms. Gosses at [email protected] if you have any questions or if you would like to help photograph and upload student art.

"Leveling the Playing Field: Addressing Issues of Equity to Close the Achievement Gap”
Children belonging to historically disparaged groups face an uneven playing field in public education. Addressing this issue remains one of the main challenges in advancing equity and excellence in education. The achievement gap, or the observed, persistent disparity in measure of educational performance among groups defined by socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and gender, as well as providing equity across gifted education programs, programs for international and LGBTQ families, and special education programs are challenges that many communities face today. As such, the Shaker Heights School District developed initiatives like the Equity Task Force and other student and parent led groups to tackle the issues of equity and the achievement gap to increase student success in all levels of education at Shaker schools. Our speakers will discuss: what the achievement gap looks like in Shaker, the mission and goals of the newly formed Equity Task Force, and how to empower parents and community members to help remove barriers to overall student success. Please come and join our discussion.
Please join us on: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 7 pm at Onaway School
Speakers include: Dr. Gregory Hutchings,Jr., Superintendent, Shaker Heights City Schools, Mr. Eric Forman, Principal at Onaway Elementary, Dr. Ricia Weiner, school psychologist and mother of two Onaway students, and Mrs. Denise Brown, IB & Enrichment Coordinator, Onaway School.
