From Mr. Florence

Mercer’s International Baccalaureate evaluation visit will take place Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21, 2016. We are looking forward to welcoming the IB team as they review our curriculum; interview our students, teachers, and parents; and tour our school. The comprehensive visit is conducted to assess how Mercer Elementary is implementing the policies and practices of the International Baccalaureate Programme. I want to thank the entire Mercer School community for completing preparations for this important visit over the last year. Maria Baker, our IB Coordinator, is to be commended for her outstanding work throughout the entire process.

Three cheers for Mercer School! The Mercer Olympics are here! This amazing campaign funds our yearly PTO activities while promoting school spirit.  Our goal is to have every Mercer student contribute to the campaign. As an International Baccalaureate World School we are one world and we are one people. If you miss today’s exciting opening ceremony, please join us on Monday, October 24, at 2:15 p.m. for an incredible closing ceremony.

I wanted to clarify that students who are dropped off by car in the morning should go through the car line at Door F located on the West side of the building. Mr. Daniels will be stationed at this door each day beginning at 8:45 a.m. Students are not to arrive at school prior to this time. Thank you.

MERCER OLYMPICS All are invited to attend the Mercer Olympics Opening Ceremony today, Friday 10/14, at 2:30 pm in the gym . Wear your child’s class color (Pre-K/K: blue, 1st: black, 2nd: red, 3rd: yellow, 4th: green), or sport a rainbow of colors if you have more than one child to represent! It is a great time for students to commit to themselves as students, classmates, and a member of the Mercer community. We look forward to meeting new people and seeing familiar faces! The kids are already excited to start fundraising! Students can begin to bring in their donations on Monday 10/17 -- please put your student's collected donations and donation forms (sent home in the Olympics information packet on 10/7, extras are available in the Mercer office) in an envelope labeled with your student's name. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Mercer's Evaluation Visit As an IB World School, Mercer is due to undergo its first Evaluation Visit. The purpose of this visit is for the International Baccalaureate to assess the degree to which we are meeting the standards and practices of IB. It is the culmination of our year-long self-study process that was conducted during the 2015-2016 school year by the Mercer staff, students, and community.

The evaluation team is comprised of two IB educators trained to visit and evaluate IB World Schools. They will be meeting with all instructional staff, the IB coordinator, principal, a student panel and a parent panel. The information obtained from this process informed the development of our 5-year IB Action Plan, which will be the roadmap for our staff as we strive to make Mercer School the best it can be. Three main areas we will focus upon include: Action, Assessment and an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Our self-study revealed many strengths, as well:  promoting the IB Learner Profile, Collaborative Planning, Resources and Support.  Additionally, Mercer has a highly qualified staff who hold master's degrees and regularly attend professional learning to improve their instructional practice. We are proud of these accomplishments.
This is an important time for Mercer. We are looking forward to celebrating our strengths and continue to evolve to help Mercer School be its best.
