Please join us for the October PTO meeting. Mr. Florence will begin the evening with a Mercer update and Annette Tucker Sutherland, Shaker Heights City Schools board member, will present on the District master plan (facilities). This will be the primary focus of the evening. Meetings are open to all parents and guardians. We hope you will consider this opportunity to share your ideas and learn more about Mercer and our school community.
All are invited to attend the Mercer Olympics Opening Ceremony
today, Friday 10/14, at 2:30 pm in the gym
. Wear your child’s class color (Pre-K/K: blue, 1st: black, 2nd: red, 3rd: yellow, 4th: green), or sport a rainbow of colors if you have more than one child to represent! It is a great time for students to commit to themselves as students, classmates, and a member of the Mercer community. We look forward to meeting new people and seeing familiar faces! The kids are already excited to start fundraising! Students can begin to bring in their donations on Monday 10/17 -- please put your student's collected donations and donation forms (sent home in the Olympics information packet on 10/7, extras are available in the Mercer office) in an envelope labeled with your student's name.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Mercer's Evaluation Visit
As an IB World School, Mercer is due to undergo its first Evaluation Visit. The purpose of this visit is for the International Baccalaureate to assess the degree to which we are meeting the standards and practices of IB. It is the culmination of our year-long self-study process that was conducted during the 2015-2016 school year by the Mercer staff, students, and community.
The evaluation team is comprised of two IB educators trained to visit and evaluate IB World Schools. They will be meeting with all instructional staff, the IB coordinator, principal, a student panel and a parent panel. The information obtained from this process informed the development of our 5-year IB Action Plan, which will be the roadmap for our staff as we strive to make Mercer School the best it can be. Three main areas we will focus upon include: Action, Assessment and an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Our self-study revealed many strengths, as well: promoting the IB Learner Profile, Collaborative Planning, Resources and Support. Additionally, Mercer has a highly qualified staff who hold master's degrees and regularly attend professional learning to improve their instructional practice. We are proud of these accomplishments.
This is an important time for Mercer. We are looking forward to celebrating our strengths and continue to evolve to help Mercer School be its best.
