From Mr. Florence
Did you know that Shaker's First Class is the only preschool program in the state of Ohio to incorporate the prestigious International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme philosophy with continuation in K-12? Shaker’s full day preschool program is currently accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year and spaces are still available. The program is housed at Mercer and Onaway Elementary schools with a maximum class size of 16 at each building. More information about program requirements and fees/scholarships is available at http://www.shaker.org/EarlyChildhoodEducation.aspx or by contacting Mr. Tim Krevinko at 216-295-4263

Food, fun, games and music will be the order of the day at Mercer’s annual Chelton Park Picnic from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7 at the intersection of Hampstead and Chelton Roads. The classroom with the most students in attendance will receive a pizza lunch courtesy of yours truly! Please join us as our two school geographic areas join together as one Mercer community.

School safety drills must be performed throughout the academic year as required by the State of Ohio. These include fire, tornado and safety/lockdown drills. These exercises help us be prepared in the event of an emergency situation. During the time school is in session drills are required as follows: fire drills once a month, tornado drills monthly from April to June, and three safety drills each school year. Please discuss the importance of these safety procedures with your child.

October is National Bullying Prevention month . Mercer implements the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile and Attitudes, along with the RULER Approach and Mindfulness sessions, to assist our students with self-regulation strategies and appropriate tools to help them be their best selves at all times. Detailed information regarding Shaker Heights City Schools policy on this subject can be found in your Student Handbook or by going to http://www.shaker.org/Bullying.aspx .

Please be certain to review the letter that came home with your student this week regarding Shaker’s policy for Google accounts for students. This letter is also posted on the Mercer page of www.shaker.org for your convenience.
