From Mr. Florence

Mercer students, faculty and staff are continuing their successful start of the school year with productive learning days by building and strengthening relationships. Relationships will help guide us as we navigate the path of our educational journey in the upcoming months. Positive relationships also enable everyone to maximize their potential. Mercer Elementary School is a great school. We know in life nothing is perfect. Should you want to ask a question, share a concern, or provide feedback, please know I can be reached via email at florence_j@shaker.org , District cell phone at 216-401-7622, or in the Mercer office at 216-295-4065. Collaboration is certainly important. Helen Keller stated this well when she said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Please join us on Wednesday, September 20 for the Annual Father’s Walk in conjunction with The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative. Father, stepfathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles and father figures from streets near Mercer will meet at the east end of the Green Road Rapid Station at 8:50 a.m. and walk to our school together. Mercer fathers and male guardians/family members that reside in Moreland neighborhood can board a bus that will depart from 3620 Lee Road (Transportation Warehouse #2) at 8:40 a.m. for transport to Mercer for the Father's Walk. The bus will return to Warehouse #2 promptly at 9:35 a.m. T his will provide everyone in the Mercer community an opportunity to participate in this wonderful event. There will be a reception on the oval (or in the library in case of rain) with coffee and pastries provided by the Mercer PTO. We look forward to having you join us for this very special event.

MAP testing will continue next week. You can visit the Mercer homepage of www.shaker.org to find a schedule of test times and classes participating.

Also, remember that there is no school on Thursday, September 21 in observance of Rosh Hashanah. Classes resume as usual on Friday, September 22 . Thank you.

Google Services for Students
The 2017-18 school year marks the second year Shaker students have been provided access to Google services. Students in grades kindergarten through grade eight were provided a Shaker Google account after a signed permission slip was returned.

As the district evolves and grows in its use of Google services in the classroom it has become more important than ever for students to have access early in the school year. As a result, Shaker Schools will move to an ‘opt out’ approach for parent/guardian student Google account consent. With this new approach, Shaker students will be provided a Shaker Google account, with access to grade level appropriate Google services (see table below), beginning October 2, 2017. At any time prior to or after this date, parents/guardians may opt their student(s) out of having a Google account by contacting the main office of their student’s school. If a parent/guardian opts their student out of Google services, the district will adjust account settings to prohibit access accordingly.

Gmail Restrictions As noted in the table above, Gmail services for grades 4-8 are available with restrictions. Students may access Gmail using their Shaker Google account and are restricted to only exchanging email with other Shaker accounts. This is a precautionary step in order to begin exposing students to the use of electronic communication while preventing anyone who is not a part of Shaker Schools from communicating with students via email.

Thank You For parents/guardians who have already provided a signed student Google permission form, thank you. You do not need to do anything further. Your student’s Google account is available or not based on how you previously completed the form.

Volunteer for Mercer’s Fundraiser!
Our school’s ONLY FUNDRAISER, known as the Mercer Olympics, will be October 20 – 27, but there is a lot to be done before that can happen.

Please attend a Mercer Olympics volunteer meeting on either Monday, September 18 at 9:30 am or Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30 pm. Both meetings will be held in the Mercer auditorium. Learn more about the Mercer Olympics fundraiser and the volunteer opportunities that are available. Plus, be part of the amazing energy that makes our school so special!
If you are interested in volunteering, please email the Mercer Olympics Co-Chairs at  mercerolympics@gmail.com , and indicate which meeting you plan to attend. Last minute changes and walk-ins are welcome! If you can’t attend either volunteer meeting, you will still be able to help. Volunteer opportunities will be available via Sign up Genius closer to the event.

If you have any questions, please contact Olympics Co-Chairs Emelye Crehore, Kris Gobel, and Angela Lind at  mercerolympics@gmail.com .
