PARCC after vacation!
Monday Morning Minute
April 11, 2016
Message from Assistant Principal Benzie

Good morning,

PARCC testing for ELA and Math begins on Thursday, April 28 at the middle school with 6th grade English and Language Arts testing. The complete PARCC schedule can be found on our website here.  Testing will start immediately after the first period bell, so it is imperative for all students to arrive to school on time. We must strictly adhere to the schedule set forth in the DESE guidelines; therefore your child’s attendance is crucial during the testing period. If at all possible, please avoid making appointments for your child on PARCC days as tardiness and early dismissals can have a negative impact on your child’s testing.  Again, we ask that all students be present and on time during the testing periods.

It is time to get CHARGED UP FOR PARCC!

Our students take PARCC tests online.  In order to be prepared, students must come to school with their Chromebook fully CHARGED. To help students get in the habit of nightly charging, we started a “charge up challenge” between homerooms. Each morning, the homeroom with the most “charged up” Chromebooks earns a lightning bolt for their door, and the homeroom with the most lightning bolts will be the winner! We cannot stress enough the importance of charging Chromebooks EVERY NIGHT.

For the ELA portion of the test, 6th,7th and 8th graders are required to use headphones. Please have your child bring a pair of headphones to school at least one day before his/her testing dates.  Headphones will be collected and stored by homeroom teachers, and distributed on PARCC days.

For the Math portion, PARCC has different calculator requirements for each grade level. The test has an on-line calculator for students to use, but any student who would prefer a physical calculator should bring the appropriate one, as indicated below:

  • 6th and 7th grade – four function with square root and percentage only
  • 8th grade – scientific calculator only

It is important to note the DESE rules on cell phones during PARCC. “Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed for any reason during testing, even after you turn in your materials. Results will be invalidated for students with cell phones.” For this reason, we ask that students leave their cell phones at home during testing.  Cell phones brought to school will be collected by proctors and returned after testing has finished for the day.

We appreciate your help! To maximize your child’s potential during testing, please be sure he/she gets a good night’s sleep, eats a complete and healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.

Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Warm regards,

From the Office:

Postural Screening
6th & 7th grade postural screening
April 11 & 12, 2016

6th & 7th grade annual postural screening will be held on April 11th and 12th  during Wellness classes.
For the screening,  boys will need to be shirtless and wear a pair of shorts. Girls will need to wear a pair of shorts with either a bikini top, an open back bathing suit or a halter-top.

Screenings will be performed by a Registered Nurse and will be held in a private area for each student.  Only abnormal screening results will be mailed to the parent/guardian.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Charge Up Challenge
Brought to you by the LARKers!

This week marked the beginning of our 2016 Chromebook Charge Up Challenge!

Each Homeroom is challenged to ramp up the percentage of students who start the day with a charged (>80%) Chromebook. When a Homeroom achieves that day's goal, they are entered in a contest drawing. Homerooms with a perfect record of meeting every day's challenge will also receive recognition.

Students in 6th and 7th grade began their challenge last week, and will ramp up to having every student start the day with a charged Chromebook by the end of this week. We look forward to having the momentum carry over to after vacation, when the 8th grade will embark on their challenge. The challenge also dovetails into PARCC testing, during which all students must arrive with charged Chromebooks.

The challenge is spearheaded by the LARKers, our student Help Desk. Thank you also to families for helping your student maintain a charged Chromebook throughout the year by brainstorming systems and strategies to create routines!

Middle & More Coffee
Wednesday Evening (Yes, Evening!)
April 13th, 7:00-8:00 pm

Please join us for a special evening Middle & More coffee this month with Principal Betsy Gavron and Jason Verhoosky and Jane Purser of WaylandCares. Come learn about the concerns and issues facing students at Wayland Middle School and discuss how we parents can help influence our children towards making good, healthy decisions throughout the middle school years and beyond. What does the Metro West Health Survey tell us about Wayland 'tweens and teens? How much of a problem are alcohol and substance abuse, bullying and cyberbullying, stress and depression? What changes do we see in risky behaviors and mental health between 6th and 8th grade? What can parents say and model to develop strong, resilient children?

If you can't come this month, we have two additional "Middle & More" coffees scheduled to round out the year. On Tuesday, May 17th, 9:00-10:00 am, Dossie Kahn of Wayland Youth and Family Services will join us to talk about "Fostering Independence" through the middle school years, and on Tuesday, June 14th, 9:00-10:00 am, we will discuss the current year in review and the next year ahead with Betsy Gavron. Hope to see you! Please contact Cathy Scholz at cscholz89@gmail.com if you have any questions.
