MESSAGE FROM THE
INTERIM DEAN

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine has come far in just a few short years. As interim dean, I am proud to be here as we transition from a new school to an established medical education and research program, serving the people of South Florida and beyond.

We have many accomplishments to be proud of:
  • This past Spring, we graduated our first class of M.D. students and every one of them fared well in a very competitive national match into residency.
  • We are now training residents and expanding our residency programs. It is a well-known fact that many physicians establish their practices in the same locations where they trained. Accordingly, we believe we will have an ever greater impact on improving the health & wellness of Palm Beach County residents, as well as Floridians everywhere.
  • We are recruiting internationally renowned researchers working to bring bench-to-bedside, "translational" discoveries that are impacting people's health and wellness. Globally focused, the knowledge they discover will help people live longer and better!

As we look to take our College to newer and greater heights, we will conduct a national search for the next "permanent" dean of the medical school. It will be my honor and privilege to chair this search. This work will seek the counsel of community leaders and other stakeholders to ensure we attract a dynamic, new leader for this critical position. This initiative will be reflective of our very directed efforts to establish ever stronger partnerships within the University and the greater Palm Beach County community. In this, and all that we do, we will achieve more and better outcomes when we work together as partners.

We will work together to move our medical college forward, achieving innovation and excellence in education, clinical care, service and the discovery of knowledge. Our successes will always focus upon how we can best improve the health and wellness of those people we serve.

It's A Great Time To Be An Owl!

Sincerely,

Arthur J. Ross III, M.D., M.B.A.
Interim Dean and Professor

February Site Visits

doctors-clipboard.jpg On Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, representatives from the ACGME will  visit  the College for site visits to review our applications for surgery and emergency medicine residencies. These efforts are being spearheaded by Drs. Genuit and Shih, under leadership from Dr. Learman. We hope to hear this spring about launching these new programs. This is an exciting time as we hope to add these programs to our already successful internal medicine residencies. Crossing fingers !

Dr. Bjorkman's Service Honored

On Jan. 21, dozens came out to honor David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., who led our College for four years through its first match, graduation, residency launch and LCME accreditation. I was delighted and inspired to see all of you come out to support David, without whose leadership we would not all be here. I am furthered honored to continue his hard work. A special thank-you to the College's events coordinator, Joanna Duran, for organizing this special event.
