There is a lot of information about the TOPA* single-family exemption floating around, but not all of it accurate or confirmed. We want to make sure you all have the correct information. The Status of the Exemption
The TOPA Single-Family Home Exemption Amendment Act of 2018 has been signed by the Mayor and is currently under review by Congress. You can read the act here.
To be clear: This exemption is still just an act and is not yet law.
What's Next
Once the act is approved by Congress, the District Government must issue new forms to adhere to the new requirements of the law. The top priorities are the 3-day notice and the eligibility qualifications for elderly and disabled tenants with protections.
Again, this remains a work in progress and none of the above has been finalized.
The government affairs teams at DCAR and GCAAR are working diligently with DC's Department of Housing and Community Development to get all the finer details ironed out as quickly as possible.
