Science & Religion

Dr. Todd Steck (Assoc Prof Biological Sciences, UNC Charlotte) has facilitated discussions about science and religion at his church (Central UMC, Concord) as part of an effort to reconcile conflicts some feel exist between these two areas.  His goals are for people of faith to have a forum to learn more about science and discuss differing views in an open environment.  Todd is offering to be a facilitator for any church group in the district on topics including: evolution, genetically modified organisms, cloning, stem cell research, and gender.  If you are interested in talking with Todd, contact him at [email protected]

Annual Conference Ushers and Registration(ists) Needed!!! :-)

Thanks to the clergy and laity who have contacted me to volunteer already! You are very much appreciated!

Metro district is to provide
8 ushers - preferably 4 laity and 4 clergy.  Tentatively, we will plan to train the ushers at 9:00 am on Friday, June 23 rd.  This will be prior to opening worship, which will be confirmed at a later date.

  • Ushers need to be able to stand on their feet for periods of time
  • They will be the "face of hospitality" for the conference
  • They need to be dependable so that we are certain to have ushers available for each session and worship service.
    • We will need clergy ushers on Thursday afternoon for the clergy session.
    • And, we will need ushers who can stay through worship on Sunday.
    • Also, there are some components of ushering that can get complicated (directing members for communion, receiving the offering, taking a standing count ballot).  It's important that the ushers are able to provide these services
If you're interested in serving as an usher (or know someone who might be interested), please email Ravonda Britt.

ALSO... If you know of people who might help with registration (Thursday morning through Friday evening), please send that information to me.  Clergy spouses make great registration volunteers!

Empowering Generosity

The General Council on Finance and Administration of The United Methodist Church has recently expanded their relationship with Vanco Payment Solutions, a provider of giving technology for faith based organizations, to help churches strengthen financial stewardship. Through their Empowering Generosity program, Vanco encourages and facilitates the adoption of electronic giving to enable churches - and their members - to fulfill their mission and ministries. Attached to this e-mail is a presentation from Vanco describing the Empowering Generosity program (including rates) and testimonials from other United Methodist Churches and a case study.

Electronic giving has been adopted widely enough and long enough to accumulate compelling data to support its positive impact on giving. As one example, Vanco recently studied a group of 2,344 churches with average weekly attendance between 100-250.  Of the congregations studied, those that accepted both electronic checks and credit cards realized 26% greater total income than those accepting just cash and personal checks.  If only electronic checks were accepted and not credit or debit cards, total income was 14% higher.  While not a guarantee of increased donation income, these findings combined with the appetite of members for easy to use donation options make this a win-win for churches and members alike.

How does a church get started?
  • Call Vanco at 800.675.7430, ask for sales, mention the Empowering Generosity program or that you are a UMC church OR
