Manufacturing Day 2017
Multiple manufacturers across the region opened their doors simultaneously to celebrate National Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) on Oct. 6. The events were part of an effort to change perceptions about today’s manufacturing environment and draw attention to the outstanding opportunities that a career in manufacturing can provide.

The Monroe County Intermediate School District (MCISD) and the Monroe County BDC (BDC) coordinated Monroe County’s efforts in a region-wide initiative, covering Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe and Washtenaw counties, with the goal of exposing 1,000 middle and high school students to local manufacturing career opportunities.

In Monroe County, we had eleven manufacturers participating: Accuworx, Automatic Handling, Fischer Tool & Die, Fluid Equipment Design Company (Fedco), Gerdau, Hanwha, Midway Products Group, Premier Industries, Spiratex and Ventower Industries.

“We appreciate our manufacturing community taking the time from their business schedules to open their shop floors to our students,” said Tim Lake President and CEO of the BDC. “Allowing our students to tour and ask questions about the various careers associated in todays advanced manufacturing environment is extremely helpful as students explore various careers,” Lake continued.

Schools from all nine districts participated which included Airport Community Schools, Bedford Public Schools, Dundee Community Schools, Ida Public Schools, Jefferson Schools, Mason Consolidated Schools, Monroe Public Schools, Summerfield Schools and Whiteford Agricultural Schools. We had a total of 128 eighth grade students participate.

Manufacturing Day is a national event executed at the local level with the support of thousands of manufacturers as they host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and other local community members at open houses, plant tours and presentations designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers.

PTAC Partnership with the BDC
The BDC welcomes the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) at Schoolcraft College as our newest partner!
PTAC provides assistance to businesses in marketing products and services to federal, state and local government agencies. Schoolcraft College, in Livonia, has sponsored a local PTAC program since 1985 and is the link between the government, prime contractors and businesses.
The U.S. Government spends billions of dollars annually making it the world's largest purchaser of goods and services. Consider the amount of state and local spending and you can see that securing government contracts might be a great opportunity.
That being said, navigating the system can be daunting. That is where our new partners at Schoolcraft College come in. They provide the following services:
  • Orientation to Government Contracting
  • One-on-one business consulting
  • Quick and easy ways to identify bidding opportunities
  • Timely information, research and support
  • Quality training and networking events spotlighting specific government agencies
  • Identifying laws and regulations for government contracting
  • Outlining best practices on selling to the military
  • Specialized advocacy for your business
Whether you are just beginning to pursue government contracting or are experienced in government contracting, the Schoolcraft College PTAC team has experienced counselors ready to assist you. Should you have an interest in meeting with a counselor or learning more about government contracting, please call our office at 734-241-8081 extension 102 and speak with LuAnn. She will be able to connect you to the correct assistance.
We plan on conducting a Government Contracting 101 session after the first of the year. Please watch our newsletter and follow us on Twitter for the exact date and time.

This will be the Village of Dundee's fifth hotel and will offer 105 available rooms. And, we were told that when there are events going on in the vicinity, the present hotels are sold out in many instances.

Congratulations Village of Dundee on your new business partner!
