Hello from MiKE

Hi everybody!

The MiKE team is busy planning the next MiKE Quarterly Council Meeting. It's fast-approaching so be sure to register and get it on your calendar now. Details are below.

We had a great turnout for the Hackathon for Humanity + MADE at MiKE event last weekend. Thanks to all of the presenters and participants.

The holiday season is in full swing. As you're looking for gifts for your special someone, secret Santa, cute little nieces or nephews or your office's White Elephant party, consider local artists, designers and developers!

Cheers!

Hackathon for Humanity + MADE at MiKE

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Hackathon for Humanity + MADE at MiKE event last weekend. More than 70 people attended the workshops and hackathon.

Mobile design workshop
MADE at MiKE workshop

The workshops were held Saturday morning and dealt with a multitude of topics including front end design and development, how to launch an app in 90 days and mobile considerations for non-profits, arts and culture.

Saturday afternoon, Bucketworks hosted the Milwaukee leg of Random Hacks of Kindness' (RHoK) global hackathon. Seven teams assembled in pursuit of projects that would help solve social problems. Problem definitions came from government agencies, non-profits, companies, and individual entrepreneurs. The first prize, a membership at Bucketworks to continue efforts, was awarded to a team working on data collection and sharing among beekeepers. A team working on a water efficiency dashboard was awarded a cash prize and invited to continue development with assistance from the Milwaukee Water Council. A third prize recipient was a team that developed a mobile app to build smarter bike routes and help cyclists avoid hazards.

One crazy, cool resume...

Check out this resume. Oh, by the way, he's coming to Milwaukee for the MiKE Quarterly Council Meeting on January 23rd! We'll actually have two keynote speakers, Jon Cropper and Katherine von Jan. They have set their sights on revamping the nation's education system using design and technology.

Jon Cropper

Jon Cropper is the founder of Futurlogic, a next generation online education company. Its focus is developing best-in-class online schools in alliance with major brand sponsors. Did we mention Jon began his career at MTV? Or that he was P. Diddy's CMO? Bad boy for life.

Katherine von Jan

Katherine von Jan wants you to "unleash your rad!" Katherine started RadMatter which helps organizations understand the power of games to realize epic results. Why is "World of Warcraft" way more fun than math homework? Why do college students fail out of school and yet can master the game "Halo"? RadMatter has the answers and is implementing an imaginative (and totally wacky) approach to developing talent.

OPEN MiKE

H2OScore.com Partners with OPEN MiKE

Marquette's Social Innovation start-up H2OScore.com has partnered with MiKE to provide an intern with an opportunity to redesign its website. On the heels of its participation in the 94 Labs/Marquette University Hackathon in November, which led to the development of a water sustainability Facebook game, H2OScore.com is expecting to reveal its new look and additional functionality early in the new year.

MiKE LiKEs Tech News

As we look for ways to influence and enhance MiKE, we often come across neat articles about technology, innovation, MiKE's partners, etc. Here are a few from recent days:

Get Involved!

There are a number of ways to get involved in the MiKE community.  These are just a few:

Tuesday, December 13, 6pm

Startup MKE December Meetup @ The Hudson, 310 N. Broadway

Join us for StartupMKE's December meetup. The agenda will feature Joe Poeschl of Junto (an online incubator + crowdfunding site), and author Stacy Riedel, a true entrepreneur in her own right, who will be speaking about an author's path to becoming published. The story of the writers' path to success is almost parallel to that of a start-up company's. And, of course, we'll be providing free beer at this meetup event! Click here for more information.

Wednesday, December 14, 6-9pm

Arts and Technology Night @ UWM, Kenilworth Square East

Artists enrolled in interdisciplinary art programs of UWM unite in an exhibition of art and technology. Explore three floors of work created by Peck School students. Expand your understanding of how technology can shape different media from the traditional to the cutting edge. This is a free event. Click here for more information.

Saturday, December 31, 8pm-3am

NEWaukee New Year's Eve @ The Eisner Museum, 208 N Water St.

800 friends, 3 floors, 1 night! The Eisner Museum has been closed for two years, and with the help from our friends at MIAD, we bring the former advertising museum back to life for one night and one night only during Milwaukee's most exclusive New Year's Eve party. For the fourth year in a row, NEWaukee redefines New Year's Eve with an experience unlike any other in the city of Milwaukee.

This year, we'll have live art on three levels, multiple DJs and bands as well as the classic midnight balloon drop. But we don't leave you hanging there - the party will kick into high gear at 2 am with the West Coast Balloon Drop. Reserve your spot early because this party always sells out. Click here for more information.
