Miami-Dade Stroke Consortium Partners with National Organization for American Stroke Month

In one year, roughly 800,000 people will be stroke victims- enough to fill a baseball stadium fifteen times over!

In honor of national stroke month, on May 23, 2015 at 7:15 pm, the Miami Marlins Ballpark will be home to a special event and collaboration between stroke organizations with a common goal: spread awareness to improve outcomes.

For this event, the Miami Dade Stroke Consortium, the entity that focuses on stroke research within the Neuroscience Centers of Florida Foundation, is working to support the Strike Out Stroke organization, a nonprofit whose purpose is to increase the number of stroke survivors who arrive to a hospital in time to receive life-saving treatment. MDSC's support of Strike Out Stroke directly aligns with its own mission, which is to improve stroke care and outcomes.

The network of hospitals and EMS organizations that participates in data collection and research with MDSC will also show their support and be present to spread stroke awareness.  This includes representation from all 6 fire rescue services in Miami-Dade County, and a majority of the stroke-ready hospitals.

The Strike out Stroke organization has put an interesting spin on the game of baseball by partnering with major league teams across the US to spread the FAST message and raise funds to support an annual event that they host called "Stroke Camp".  A portion of the proceeds gained from ticket sales at the stadiums is used to host the week-long camp for stroke survivors to come together for support and education as they continue their road to recovery.

The event occurring May will be the second year in a row that the Strike Out Stroke organization has worked with the Marlins.   Last year, MDSC's network of EMS departments were present and took blood pressure readings to inform the crowd of the importance of monitoring blood pressure for stroke prevention.  "The event was successful, however, we only hope that it can continue to improve through a better attendance in support of this great cause", says EMS Captain John Curry of Coral Gables Fire Rescue.

MDSC encourages members of the South Florida community to come out and support this event.  The Marlins will be up against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:15 PM, with exciting pre-game messages and entertainment all related to spreading stroke awareness starting at 5:30.

Together, MDSC and Strike Out Stroke hope to raise awareness of stroke symptoms and the importance of educating the South Florida community to act F.A.S.T, all while taking part in the great American pastime of baseball.
