Bright Motion

To celebrate the release of his new album The Bright Motion on New Amsterdam Records, Mizrahi will take the stage at (Le) Poisson Rouge on June 12. The performance will feature music from the album, including a live premiere of William Brittelle's piece on the record, "Computer Wave." Nadia Sirota will join to debut work from her forthcoming sophomore album, out fall 2012 also on New Amsterdam Records.  Nadia will perform the New York premiere of Judd Greenstein's "In Teaching Others We Teach Ourselves" for multi-tracked viola, in addition to other works from the forthcoming album, which will include pieces by Missy Mazzoli, Shara Worden, Daniel Bjarnasson, and more.  Get your tickets here!

The Bright Motion serves as a revitalization of a classic instrument told through new musical ideas with compositions by some of today's most innovative composers: William Brittelle, Ryan Brown, Patrick Burke, Mark Dancigers, Judd Greenstein, and John Mayrose.  Almost all of the pieces were written specifically with Mizrahi's hands, sound, and approach in mind. Both a testament to Mizrahi's dedication to contemporary music, as well as his deep appreciation for the piano's rich time-tested splendor, Motion is a masterfully performed, beautifully recorded, and truly singular statement of the piano's indispensable role in modern music today.  You can listen to the album in its entirety (FREE) and purchase it here.

The album was recently featured as Q2 Music's Album of the Week, where Olivia Giovetti called Mizrahi "one of those musicians who is endlessly fascinated by everything."  You can stream the album in its entirety on the Q2 website or at NewAmsterdamRecords.com.  The album also recently received a glowing review at Seated Ovation and a shout-out from New Yorker critic Alex Ross.

More about the album:

While showcasing each forward-thinking composer's unique voice for the classical instrument through an astoundingly wide variety of approaches to timbre, melody, form, rhythm, and range, Mizrahi's expert execution unites each track in a beautiful and harmonious way to create an experience that builds on the solo piano tradition yet has a modern sense of flow and emotional consistency. This admirable dexterity comes from years spent dedicated to performing 21st century music not only as a soloist, but as a founding member of the renowned Moët Trio and NOW Ensemble-a chamber group devoted to the commissioning and performing of new music by emerging composers (of which Burke, Greenstein, and Dancigers are members as well; Dancigers also produced the album). Motion embodies a generation of young composers and performers who are establishing the new music traditions of today while creating works that find contemporary resonance with the traditions of yesterday.

The album has already received a number of glowing reviews.  In a 4.5 star review, MUSO Magazine wrote, "Brittelle's writing is as painstakingly plotted and interconnected as a circuitboard... This is a fast, fun, freedom-fueled flurry of a record that is as occasionally daft as it is complicated."  ClassicalTV writer George Grella wrote that Brittelle "is creating a body of work that has no precedent, and marks him as a one of the most promising heirs of the vital American maverick tradition."  In another highly positive review, Textura called the album "intoxicating" and "exuberant."

More about the album:

Loving the Chambered Nautilus is a new series of retro-futuristic electro-acoustic chamber pieces composed by William Brittelle and performed by violist Nadia Sirota, cellist Clarice Jensen and the members of ACME (The American Contemporary Music Ensemble), one of new music's finest professional chamber ensembles. The project re-imagines chamber music for the 21st century, juxtaposing the energy and sonic language of pop drum and synth programming with classical forms and instrumentation, resulting in propulsive and visceral music. Each work in the Loving the Chambered Nautilus series was composed by Brittelle to highlight ACME's remarkable rhythmic precision and crystalline tone against a backdrop of his programmed electro landscapes.

About Us

New Amsterdam Presents is a non-profit presenting and artist service organization of which New Amsterdam Records is a subsidiary. Our mission is to support the public's engagement with new music by composers and performers whose work grows from the fertile ground between genres. Our label's diverse catalogue and presenting history reflects New Amsterdam's commitment to supporting and nurturing projects that wholly fulfill the intent of their creators, resulting in music without walls, without an agenda, and without a central organizing principle. Since the our organization's inception, New Amsterdam and its artists have been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, and Studio 360, in prominent print publications such as Newsweek, the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Alarm Press, the Village Voice, and Time Out New York, and in tastemaker online magazines such as Pitchfork, The Awl, PopMatters, and BlackBook.  Newsweek's Seth Colter Walls called New Amsterdam "an upstart label that's been releasing one quality disc after another since its founding", and the Sunday New York Times lauded our first slate of releases in two separate year-end best-of articles.  New Amsterdam has presented or co-presented over 60 concerts of groundbreaking new music over the past four years. Highlights include 2009's Undiscovered Islands series, the 2009-10 Archipelago chamber music series, and 2011's Ecstatic Music Festival (presented in association with Kaufman Center). As part of its ongoing programming, New Amsterdam has made a priority of forming partnerships with other like-minded organizations, including Cantaloupe Records, MATA, Galapagos Art Space, Minneapolis's Southern Theater, Nonclassical (UK), the Manhattan New Music Project, Search and Restore, Kaufman Center, and AMC's Counterstream Radio.  2010-2011 was a season of unprecedented praise for New Amsterdam releases - the label garnered it's first Grammy Nomination, and our titles were included the New York Times Gift Guide, on the NPR and New York Times Top Ten Classical Releases of the Year List, eMusic's Best Albums of the Year (3 titles), Time Out New York and Time Out Chicago's Best Classical Releases of the Year, and NPR's Top 5 Genre-Defying Albums of the Year - not to mention two effusive reviews on the tastemaker website Pitchfork.com.
