ACEC Emerging Leaders Program Kicks Off
First Session Held September 28 & 29 in Lansing

The 2017 ACEC/Michigan Emerging Leaders Program kicked off its first session in Lansing this month. The Emerging Leaders Program is for individuals committed to developing their leadership abilities. This program imparts specific skills and competencies identified by top ACEC/Michigan principals as critical for leadership success. These highly interactive sessions are taught by experts in the field of business administration and people management in professional services firms.
The class will enjoy a dynamic schedule of topics including: Strategic Planning, Governmental Affairs, Risk Management, HR - Recruiting, Retaining and Owning, Leadership, Business Development, Economics of Private Practice, and the Senior Leaders Roundtable: From Management to Leadership - Secrets of Success. Sessions take place this fall in Lansing, Detroit and Grand Rapids.

MDOT-ACEC Partnering Award Nominations

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M) are excited to announce the fifth annual "MDOT-ACEC Partnership Charter Award." This award recognizes project managers and consultants for their commitment to excellence and promoting an enhanced business partnership based on the ideals set forth in the MDOT/ACEC Partnership Charter Agreement. These ideals include mutual trust, effective communication, continuous improvement, embracing innovation, and timely issues resolution.
The award will be judged equally on 5 principles:
*Providing Cost-Effective, High-Quality Services
*Partnering in Streamlining Business Practices
*Engaging in Effective Communication
*Commitment to Transparency & Accountability
*Promoting Innovation and Sustainability
Projects accomplished by team effort between MDOT project managers and ACEC consultants are eligible to receive this award.

Projects from across the
state compete each year for the coveted "Eminent Conceptor" Award. In early November, a panel of judges will evaluate the projects based on innovation, complexity, client satisfaction and future value to the profession.

ACEC Michigan 2018 Firm of the Year
Applications Now Available
ACEC/Michigan's "Member Firm of the Year" award program is now open for entry! The submission deadline is November 22, 2017) This prestigious and coveted award recognizes ACEC/M member firms for their demonstrated leadership in promoting engineering through their activities with ACEC and in their communities. Winning this competition will greatly enhance your firm's image and your marketing efforts to both current and potential clients.
Firms are judged on three important factors:
- Contributions to the Success of ACEC/Michigan
- Advancement of the Consulting Design Profession
- Community Involvement
A small firm (1-30 employees) and a large firm (>30 employees) are eligible to receive this award. The winning firm(s) will be announced at the ACEC/Michigan Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards program on March 10, 2018 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.

Mechanical Forensic Engineering

This one-day Mechanical Forensic Engineering Seminar will provide attendees with a solid understanding of the forensic engineering process. During the seminar, attendees will:
* Understand general causes and consequences of mechanical failures
* Examine written warnings, owner's manuals and intuitive design Learn techniques for documenting failures and conducting investigations
* Review the forensic engineering report and understand how it is organized
* Discuss material and non-material causes of failures and examine case studies
Erosion and Sediment Transport (8 PDHs)
The View at Cooley Law School Stadium - Lansing
Tuesday, Oct. 10
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Engineers, water resource and environmental professionals are invited to attend this full-day, hands-on seminar that offers the fundamentals of erosion and sediment transport. Upon completion of the seminar, you will be able to determine when and how erosion and sedimentation occur and estimate the magnitude of sediment transport. Attendees will also become familiar with applications in such fields as river engineering, stormwater management, roads, culvert design, dam removal, and fisheries. Erosion-related policies and practices in Michigan will also be discussed.
Emergency Action Preparedness (3 PDHs)

Wednesday, Oct. 25
8:30 a.m. - Noon
This half-day seminar will discuss the Incident Command System and how it's concepts and practices apply to private sector stakeholders, as well as overall emergency actions and the disaster process. There will also be a presentation on the City of Grand Rapids 2013 Flood Event: past versus present response approaches, and what roles private sector consultants and contractors played during the Event. The seminar will also include discussion on emergency action preparedness and how you can prepare.

ACEC Hosting NHI Bridge Class
December 4-15, Lansing
|
ACEC Michigan is hosting the NHI 10-Day Training Course #130055 entitled "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges." Due to recent changes in the Federal Regulations, this training is becoming a must in order to be qualified to inspect local and state bridges.
Satisfactory completion of this course will fulfill the training requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) for a comprehensive training course. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: describe, identify, evaluate and document the various components and deficiencies that can exist on bridge components and elements; list design characteristics and describe inspection methods and locations for common concrete, steel and timber structures; and demonstrate how to field inspect/evaluate common concrete, steel and timber bridges.
Registration is open on the ACEC/M website. Prerequisites are required for this course and class size is limited to 30 attendees. Attendees will be awarded 6.7 Continuing Education Units (1 CEU = 10 PDHs).
Registration deadline is Tuesday, October 31, 2017.
Cancellation policy: Cancellations, with full refund, will be accepted until October 31. No refunds will be given after October 31. Registrations are transferable.

PSMJ Principals Bootcamp Offered
January 18-19, Lansing
ACEC will again host the ever popular PSMJ Principals Bootcamp January 18 - 19, 2018 in Lansing. This A/E/C Principals Bootcamp demonstrates how the most successful firm leaders are adapting to today's fast-paced economic changes. Instructors will directly address your needs and questions and offer advice from their years of practical design firm experience. You'll walk away with innovative ideas and dynamic new approaches to these challenging times that your entire firm can put into action right away.

ACEC/M Scholarships
Application Deadline is January 5, 2018
ACEC/Michigan is planning to award over $12,000 to engineering and surveying students enrolled in an ABET accredited College or University.
Applications are now available on the ACEC/M website, and are due to ACEC by January 5, 2018. Applicants will be judged on a written essay, their work experience, employer/faculty recommendations, community involvement and their GPA.
