MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Interview with Adrienne Hurburt-Stroud
|
Interview by Patricia Eldred
Patricia joined MOM (Middleton Outreach Ministry) in December 2015 as Director of Development. She is currently engaged in inspiring and facilitating donations from community businesses, foundations, individuals, service and, faith-based organizations, to support MOM's work. Patricia has worked as a development professional with numerous Wisconsin nonprofit organizations for more than twenty years and holds the Certified Fundraising Executive credential.
Meet: Adrienne Hulburt-Stroud
Owner, Common Grounds Middleton
Where did you grow up? What did you want to be when you grew up?
I'm a Wisconsin girl, born in Milton, a very small town and moved to Madison in 2008. For a long time, I wanted to become an elementary school teacher, and did end up teaching preschool for many years, but learned over time that my true passion was finding unique and fun ways to bring people together.
Tell me a little about your background. How did your previous work lead you to your vision and development of Common Ground?
Common Ground is a culmination of many of my passions- organizing community events, enjoying good food & drink among friends, as well as a need I saw in the community for gathering space. One of the many regular events we host at Common Ground is Madison West Writers Group meetings. I started the MadWest Group in 2014 through meetup.com and we now have over 1,000 members and regular events throughout the month.
Over time, the idea began to grow in my mind of a shared community space where people could come together and enjoy activities they were interested in, or try something completely new. While doing this, also find comradery, support, build new friendships and a true community outside of the digital world. I spent over a year in the planning and organizing stage writing my business plan, looking at properties, meeting with existing building owners and building up an amazing network of fellow event hosts who would be interested in using the space once I acquired it.
When did CG officially open? Why did you select the Middleton community? What do you see as your current role in the business and in the community?
I acquired the building December 1, and myself and our head chef Cory Topel were here every day until the day we opened January 22, alongside a couple of my amazing family members who helped us remodel the building. My initial plan was to simply have a café and make most of the spaces available for groups to meet, classes, that sort of thing. However, we have a large, well-equipped kitchen here, with counter and bar space, so ultimately we decided to become a full service restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner along with our café items. We have a strong emphasis on being environmentally responsible with biodegradable disposables, including our to-go cups, boxes, straws, etc. We also focus on using local vendors, like meats from Conscious Carnivore, Bering Bounty Seafood, Bagels Forever, Monona Bakery, Just Coffee, Rishi Tea, Sassy Cow Dairy, etc. On Friday nights we have an old fashioned Wisconsin Fish Fry and brunch every Sunday. We also have plenty of healthy, allergy-conscious and gluten-free choices, as well as meals "for the littles."
All sorts of community events take place here on the main floor and in the large and smaller meeting rooms upstairs. There are yoga classes, board game nights, a wide variety of live music events, book clubs, writer's group, children and family activities, art and craft classes, and much more. We are excited to be adding more outdoor seating and activities with the warm weather as well!
What is your vision for the future in the restaurant/community building business?
Common Ground is a two part project that I lovingly refer to as "country mouse" and "city mouse." Our current iteration is "city mouse," and down the road I plan to build Common Ground Farm that would consist of another community café and gathering space with more of a focus on "farm to table" type meals. There would also be outdoor space for retreats, live music, fairs, workshops for art and other activities, and so many other wonderful community features in a rural setting. This would also give us the opportunity to grow our own produce and raise animals.
What is the best part of your job? What is the most fun-what is the most challenging?
Our amazing team is the best part, as we have grown quite close in the last few months launching a brand new, bouncing baby business into the community. We work hard but have a deep respect and caring for one another. The most fun is seeing people using and enjoying the space, working with event hosts and feeling like a part of a true community.
The most challenging is the long hours, juggling all of the endless tasks that come with running a business, and keeping up with emails and office work in the midst of it all. I have to say though, I am loving every single second, as each one means I've finally been able to answer my call to create a safe space where all people are able to come together and find common ground.
What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?
For fun I love to hang out with my family--my husband Aaron, Son Teddy and daughter Eloise. Lately we somehow always end up at Common Ground for dinner or music! Aside from that, we love to go on adventures to museums, the zoo, day trips to attractions in nearby cities and just spending time together.
I have always loved writing and am now on the board of the Wisconsin Writers' Association, a 70 year old organization promoting the literary arts. I also love film, music, art and other many other creative endeavors.
